Advice Required: How to do a complete reset of MSFS 2024

I have had numerous issues after launch and am now at the stage where the sim loads OK but has a few issues. The critical one for me is that it crashes to desktop if I try to customise the character.
Not having a correct character model stops other things working as the “Red Man Error” model that appears in the place of your avatar is scaled wrongly so, for instance, you cannot get out of the plane in the career mode, nor indeed use any of the controls.

I skipped the character creation option when I first installed the sim as it was taking hours to load and I believed I could do it later when everything had settled down. So, I now cannot progress and have several hours logged when I haven’t really flown anywhere.

What I want to do is go back to a vanilla install and create my character during the install to avoid the CTDs from trying to do it afterwards.
Does anyone know how to do a complete re-install of MSFS 2024, including deleting any character profile created? I am pretty sure that this will not simply be a case of selecting uninstall from the store, then re-installing it. I would bet that it leaves files around, particularly on the server that “remembers” your identity and progress.
I am not bothered about any achievements/progress etc as I haven’t really done anything.

I just want to get to the point where I can create a character and start a career and I can’t see any way of doing that without completely deleting all the files that the installation created so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Same as any other windows store apps.

  1. Open “Add or Remove Programs” in Windows
  2. Find MSFS 2024
  3. From the “…” menu click Advanced Options
  4. Scroll down to the “Reset” section

Try a “Repair” first. It only takes a few seconds. It fixed FS 2024 not loading terrain for me. If that doesn’t do anything then try “Reset”.

Already tried a repair. Made no difference to the CTD problems.

Would be nice to hear from anyone who has managed a complete reset including removal of all the stats for the character.

Character reset was in a menu item in the sim somewhere. I was going to use it after I finish mucking around tesing.
But I’ve not seen anyone else complain of CTDs yet so they don’t seem common.

Quite a few people affected. Unfortunately, seems the reset solution may work or may not.
So annoying to see bugs like this :frowning:

My thrustmaster joystick and throttle control are backwards. When I start the career and go on the familiarization flight I don’t get the upwind end marker. The marker is hugging the plane and says 3043 NM.

I think I’ve found a way to reset your cloud profile, similar to the method for MSFS2020 that I discovered on Reddit a few months ago. I’m using the MS Store (Game Pass) version, but I believe it should also work for the Steam version (if it uses the same cloud features which I don’t see why it wouldn’t), although I can’t confirm since I don’t own it.

Step 1: Enable Offline Mode (MS Store Version Only)

If you’re using the MS Store version, you need to make the game capable of running offline first. (For Steam users, this step might not be necessary, but again, I can’t confirm.)

Follow these steps to enable offline mode:

  1. Open the Microsoft Store and click your profile image.
  2. Go to Settings and turn Offline Permissions to ON.
  3. Launch the game once to ensure it’s set up to run offline.

Step 2: Disconnect and Remove Cloud Data

  1. Disconnect your PC from the internet.
  2. Locate and delete the cloud save files.
  • For MS Store users, these files are typically located in:
    C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Limitless_8wekyb3d8bbwe\SystemAppData\wgs
  • For Steam users, the folder (if it exists) should be in a similar location under:
    C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024\
    and possibly \SystemAppData\wgs
(If someone with the Steam version can confirm this, it would be appreciated!)
  1. Delete all the contents in the respective folder.

Step 3: Reconnect and Launch the Game

  1. Launch the game while still offline. It should prompt you that an internet connection is required.
  2. At this point, reconnect your internet.
  3. The game should now restart and take you back to the initial setup screen.

This method worked for me! If you try it and find the correct folder for the Steam version, please share it here. I’d also be happy to assist if you run into issues.

That’s very comprehensive, thanks @gwnaydennl2 .
I’ll have a look at that when I get back to my pc tomorrow.

@Herk101 I can’t really see how this helps me in resetting the sim but please let me know if I am missing something.

I am unable to do this, I have it on steam
I too am facing a bug (I reported it to msfs team) and I feel resting save would fix it
I tried turning off steam cloud save and deleting C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024\ But it remembers the save, it doesnt begin with default prompts and wizard. Does anyone know how to reset save on steam.

found the save folder: MSFS 2024 is appid=2537590, its in steam/userdata folder, stop the steam cloud sync in steam settings, delte this folder and start msfs 24, it resets the save completely.

WONDERFUL!
It was driving me mad… keyboard/joystick profiling resulted in CTD’s up the wazoo… finally able to start over!!
THANKS!

Did this tend to fix your issues? I’ve been having contstant CTD after an issue with a career mission it seems.

Also will doing this delete your career save file?

I’m on Xbox x not PC

Would you know how to do reset for Xbox?

i need this too, terrible support from ms

I’ll say, might have to become a comp programer

You’re looking for PC though? I’m on Xbox.
So you can’t start the career mode either? After taking off in the familiarization flight your suppose to get the upwind end marker and well mine is stuck to the plane and says 3400 NM

On Xbox I fixed it by going through
Manage game and addons > Saved data > click on my profile > delete everywhere

It completely reset the game for me.

Tried a uninstall/reinstall via the store and Add/Remove programs. As suspected, my current status was remembered so the sim didn’t reset to the installation wizard and any selection in customise identity resulted in CTD.

Then tried @gwnaydennl2 solution above. My permissions were already set to allow offline use but I don’t think that makes any difference for this sim as it would be pretty useless being reliant totally on streaming for it’s content.
However deleting the contents of the ‘wgs’ folder did reset the sim to the first time run wizard. Unfortunately, when it got to customise identity the usual CTD occurred straight away if selecting a face, for instance.

I noticed in the customise identity section under Apparel, Headwear has a selection of headwear and Uniforms has a selection of uniforms. But Eyeware, Tops, Legwear and Footwear had nothing to select at all. These selections didn’t populate however long I left the sim running so I expect there must be missing files for these items at least.

Can anyone confirm if the items missing for me are present for them? i.e. if they see anything in Apparel besides Headwear and Uniforms.
