[ANNOUNCEMENT] GKS F-111E Aardvark

According to the author WJ Nutall the TSR-2 cancellation was tied toman improvent to the British Polaris warhead.
The idea of a British based strategic (nuclear) was dead in the mid sixties because of the very short warning from Soviet missile launch to complete base destruction (c. 4 minutes).

Very nice sentiments, Thanks.
ps. NB. It was the very dissatisfied RAAF who purchased the F111 and i strongly suspect that they may be very offended to be called ‘Brits’.

While the primary mission for the TSR2 at the design phase was for a nuclear strike aircraft, it would have been a very capable interdiction/strike platform.. basically a Tornado a good 10 years before we got the..Tornado. Development costs were well over budget, but the prototype exceeded all expectations in flight testing. If the F-111 wasn’t being pitched to the Australian government (and I believe the British as well), then the aircraft would probably have not been cancelled.

I stand corrected, I missed the second “A”.

Oh maaaaan, comes with dump and burn FX? I’m heading straight for Brisvegas.

After a little more research into the RAAF purchase of the F-111, I have thusfar only seen articles that the RAAF didn’t accept the aircraft until the issues with the redesigned intakes and articulating wing roots were resolved amongst other things. The aircraft was eventually accepted into RAAF service and provided a valuable strike capability to the RAAF in the Asian region until 2010.

In studying this aircraft in preparation for GKS’ release of this addon, it appears that the F-111 went on to fulfill its role admirably by the Nations that flew it. I don’t see the objective in focusing on an aircraft’s early development problems as oppossed to it’s career contribution to the operational aviation community - relative to an appreciation of the airframe within MSFS.

Based on the GKS MiG-21bis, I will purchase this addon upon release.

The F-111 has an incredibly interesting development history, both technically and politically. It was envisaged by Robert McNamara’s DOD as a “one size fits all” platform for both US Navy and USAF interceptor duty, as well as long-range supersonic strike. In Navy service as the F-111B, it was to carry the AWG-9 radar and AIM-54 Phoenix missile. Photos of the aircraft on a carrier deck always sort of blow my mind.

When the Navy finally told McNamara that the aircraft just wouldn’t work in the fleet defense role, the radar and Phoenix missiles were transplanted over to Grumman’s nascent Tomcat program and the rest is history.

Anyway, I’ll be looking forward to photos and user reviews before pulling the trigger myself, but this project does at least have my attention.

Awesome link! I was leading a sim tour over the Ames facility last night, talking about the wind tunnels there. So cool to see an F-111 up on the pedestal.

SIm Tour in MS2020 talking about History? AM I understanding this correctly? Can people fly along in sim, like a group flight? Then have the stream going in the background to be able to listen?

Yep, that’s what I do. Others as well. My current series involves following US Highways and talking about all the places along them, the history of how they came to be, and how they fit into the current world, with an emphasis on geography and infrastructure, with plenty of military history thrown in. We fly once a week, on Wednesday nights (in the US). Each highway takes 6-10 weekly episodes to complete, flying about three hours an episode. Sometimes we get folks with additional local knowledge to add info.

It’s a ton of fun - I’ve learned so much while prepping each week’s episode. We’re currently in the seventh season, US-101 southbound, and last night we covered Silicon Valley and San Jose.

On topic - I’m really looking forward to this release. Love the F-111, I remember seeing them a lot at MCC back in the day. Will be doing a lot of low-level runs soon!

Brief overview of the cockpit functionality can be found here

Do you know if it’s releasing on the marketplace tonight? Or did you send it to them this week?

It sounds to me that sounds off the stock F18 have been used ?, will the F111 get a costum soundpack at a later date ?

Is it releasing on the marketplace first like the mig-21?

On 1st April 1965, it was decided to cancel the BAC TSR-2. This was claimed to be on the grounds of projected costs, although some point more directly to a political option to acquire up to 110 General Dynamics F-111 aircraft from the USA.
The decision was announced in the Budget Speech of 6th April 1965 by Dennis Healey the Labour Defense Secretary

Thank you so much for reminding us that it’s time to dust off our Devil Dolls portraying Dennis Healey and Lord Mountbatten.
We’ll stick a few more pins in them to remind us of the loss of this futuristic and wonderful Aircraft.

Sounds cool, I hope to join one day. When my days off align.

It looks great.
I’ll be waiting for the release on Orbx.
Any idea on the timeframe for the release on there?

Sorry, I gotta say, the Aardvark (interestingly it’s namesake a native of Africa, not the U.S., lol)(Absolutely nothing against Africa, it’s a fine place), is the epitome of all things the way the world sees the U.S.. A flawed, complex plane that was developed based on conflicting requirements that caused it to basically be a failure out of the gate, that never lived up to its original intention, but after many years came to be something that was eventually quite a good airplane. Still somewhat flawed, but, all in all, pretty nice.

As an American myself, I had to laugh at that comment, lol.

I do gotta also say the product here looks quite awesome and fun :D. Nice work!

Have you considered Rt 20 yet, the Boston Post Road?.. From shores of Boston (almost) to the shores of Oregon, right through Yosemite, to boot. I think the longest highway in the U.S., with quite a history. That could take quite a while to get through

It’s one tour I’ve been considering and started planning out (haven’t taken the time to do it yet, though).

It’s up… installing now. :sunglasses:
