Attracting more women to MSFS 2024

I’ve been brainstorming ways to make Microsoft Flight Simulator more appealing to women, and I think we could tap into some exciting elements that involve scenic exploration, animal interactions, and meaningful missions. Women often enjoy simulation games that offer creativity, purpose, and connection with nature, think of games like Planet Zoo or The Sims, where players balance fun with responsibility.

One idea is to expand on the animal and scenic exploration features already in the game. We could introduce wildlife observation missions, where players fly over national parks or reserves, monitoring animals like real-life conservation pilots. Or, how about rescue missions, where you airlift injured animals to veterinary centers? These kinds of tasks give the game a meaningful, real world feel that many women would find rewarding.

Another exciting option could be balloon tours. Real life balloon tours are popular with women for their relaxing, scenic experience. Imagine floating over natural wonders or iconic landmarks while offering virtual guided tours to families. It could be a calm, beautiful alternative to more intense flight missions.

Expanding on family-related missions, I think we could add tasks that focus on motherhood and caregiving. There could be midwifery missions where players help fly midwives or medical supplies to remote areas, assisting pregnant mothers in need of urgent care. You could also have missions where you fly pregnant mothers to specialized hospitals or provide neonatal transport, rescuing premature babies who need critical care. These types of missions reflect the real-life humanitarian role that aviation plays in medical emergencies and could resonate deeply with women who are drawn to nurturing roles.

Taking this further, school missions could be a fantastic addition. Imagine flying to different schools across the country, giving kids a tour of your aircraft and teaching them about aviation. You could introduce aviation to children in fun, interactive ways, inspiring the next generation of pilots. This could also be part of a larger career DLC, where you take on roles that focus on schools, hospitals, and family-centered missions.

This DLC could also expand to include hospital missions that focus on family and community. Players could fly medical supplies to hospitals, assist with maternal health emergencies, or transport mothers and children in need. You could even combine this with child friendly tour missions, where players fly family-oriented routes to show kids and their parents the wonders of aviation.

To make this more immersive, we could add in game news updates tracking your career progress, similar to sports games like FIFA. As your reputation grows visiting schools, assisting hospitals, and completing family focused missions you would see your character’s story evolve through the in game news, making it more personal and satisfying.

Overall, the potential to include midwifery, motherhood, and family oriented missions could really broaden the game’s appeal to women, offering meaningful, purpose-driven tasks that reflect real-world aviation roles. I’d love to hear everyone’s thoughts on this! Could these features make MFS 2024 more inclusive and fun? Pls brainstorm ideas to bring these missions to life and create a more immersive experience for all players!

On second thoughts, maybe women should be attracted to MSFS simply because they’re interested in aircraft and aviation.

This, all day long. ^

Your post reminds me of the old joke “A doctor says they can’t operate on the patient - that’s my son!” - but the doctor isn’t the son’s father.

The answer is simple - the doctor is a woman. But a generation ago, doctors were all men. Nobody would have thought different. Times change.

I have an 8yo daughter who always came down and says “UGH BORING FLIGHT SIMULATOR” I set her up with the Top Rudder 103 for a little bit a few times and she had a blast. Dusting off some old parkflyer R/C planes with her this week. Already taught her how to properly drive hobby grade RC cars… She’s asking about a lot of world landmarks lately, with the advances in visuals in FS now, it’s a lot more interesting than Google images on an iPad.

I’ll get her up to speed to just check it out with a Cub

This.

This reminds me of the “games for girls” in the 1980s a bit, where there were games where you could go shopping in Sainsbury’s sort of thing.

Lady pilots are just as capable of handling it as anyone (as long as they don’t try to navigate (ducks))

What I would advise is that rather than deliberately targeting the fair sex, make sure they aren’t excluded. I think there will always be more men than women in flight simming but we should treat those who do want to do it as we might anyone else.

Agreed. There are woman fighter jet pilots for example that are just as effective and deadly as their male counterparts. The same goes for firefighting pilots, storm chasers, tubeliners and everything in between

Plus If they’re not interested in the first place, gender specific activities are likely not going to change that.

I mean they did try. I’ve seen lots of aircraft covered in Barbie pink squares.

(I’ll get me coat……)

I think it is very very very sweet how much time and thought the OP has put in to this (and yes we do need more women in aviation in general!).

I’m going to have to test out this theory with my 10 yo granddaughter (who’s current idea of a good time in MSFS is crashing on purpose).

I’ll tell her she has to fly a veterinarian somewhere to help a wounded horse (make that a unicorn) and see what happens!

Most definitely. My two nieces, while they love animals and “girly stuff”, also love airplanes and aviation in general. It fascinates them. They don’t love it because of “girly” add-ons - they love it because it is something that interests them and their parents support and encourage their interests, especially when it comes to STEM fields.

There’s no denying that, on a whole, girls have different preferences and ways of doing things and perhaps some of these elements could be incorporated into MSFS, but I think we have to be very careful when we start talking about targeting either sex specifically by adding on particular elements or characteristics in order to make something more enticing. Rather, in the case of aviation and young girls/women, we need to teach them that there are no barriers and that they are just as capable as their male counterparts in wanting to pursue a career in the field (or an interest in the simulator).

Moved out from the wish category that is intended for new sim features.

Heck, I check Avagel’s reviews for aircraft before anyone else.

Fist time I’ve seen her channel. Great stuff! Yet another flight sim subscription to add to the list

LOL ! I’ve watched a lot of her reviews without sound (only with subtitles), and it’s only recently that I’ve discovered that she was a woman !

This has come up a few times in the past.

I fully appreciate and support your efforts and your goal. I think changing content or adding specialized content is the wrong way, though.

The first thing we need to realize is that sex doesn’t determine what you are interested in or what kind of hobbies you choose. All the gendermarketing trash that has been around for 30 years made us believe that it’s “natural” for boys to be interested in technology, science etc., and for girls to be into familiy, care, animals and so on.
That’s wrong! It’s all about what kids are tought, what they see in their community, what other kids do, and they can feel (even if it’s not consciously reflected) what is socially accepted and supported, and what’s not.
Did you know that boys are six times more likely to be given a science related toy? Did you know that girls are much more likely to be included in household chores and care for siblings than boys?
These are the things that need to change.

Why. Please explain this. There needs to be NO BARRIERS to women entering aviation, but WHY do we NEED more women in Aviation? What is the magic number to achieve the need fulfilled?

Absolutely! Thanks OP, for making some truly excellent suggestions.
Women are getting more involved in aviation IRL - why not in the sim as well?

Like everything else, interest in aviation is a spectrum. Some like to master complex airliners. Some like low-and-slow sightseeing. Some like to fly to remote locations and camp. Some will love getting out of their plane and going a photo shoot. Some will think that’s stupid.

This sim is at its best when it appeals to the widest possible audience.

Sigh.

50% of people in the world are women yet only 7% are pilots.

Wouldn’t you say that’s a massive underrepresentation?

If you are able to take 2 minutes to do a bit of research you will very quickly learn about the discrimination and struggles women have faced in aviation (read: most industries ) and the benefits that inclusion and diversity bring to the workplace.
