Cessna 172 taildragger

Just wondering if anyone has had difficulties using the Logitech Multi Panel with the plane? I tried on the weekend and couldn’t get it to work with the auto pilot. Kept putting the altitude to 99000 ft and I couldn’t change it, and sometimes the plane would be flying all good, then suddenly spiral down towards the ground. Maybe it’s just not compatible; I’m not sure. Was using the panel through Spad.Next, and I also tested the panel and it’s settings with the Monster NX Cub, and it works fine there.

Are they planes with the advanced KAP140 mod or the default one ?

Console has heaps of errors. I tried my best to look at most of the them, but I couldn’t find anything that I thought was related. Hard to tell though. Is there a keyword I should be looking for perhaps?

My knob does not change the HDG either, it seems to be the normal behavior.
We have to clic and use heading function :

Oh my, seriously? Haha. I will double check again.

Ok, you were right. Now I’m embarrassed. I didn’t even think to try clicking it in

 sorry I didn’t notice either : I use an external button box for AP controls

Just one more thing. I noticed that the checklist card flickers when viewing the aircraft from the outside, which is a tad annoying. Luckily you let us remove the checklist. But would be good to fix if possible. I dunno if it’s livery dependent, but I’ve been flying the dirty beige version.

Yeah, that annoys me too

That’s the problem of a screen too closer to windows. I think I could hide the “screen” and show a fixed picture. I’ll try that !

oops, that needs to be fixed too !

Hi Bagolu,

First of all, thanks a lot for your excellent creations. I have downloaded them just a few days ago but it’s not the latest version so I apologies in advance for my potentially obsolete questions

Recently I have viewed the youtube channel from Aviation101, and enjoyed his 2019 Alaska playlist in which hes flies together with Chris Palmer from AngleOfAttack. I wanted to enjoy the same flights in MSFS and this led me to your mods.

So far unfortunately, I could only do a short test flight with this taildragger Cessna, but I would like to ask a few questions about the flight model. Please keep in mind I am an absolute ignorant regarding the flight characteristics of the real plane (amongst with many, MANY other real life topics… )

1- The plane seems to have quite a lot of power. I had only one passenger and the takeoffs were very short and easy. Is my understanding correct that this variant has a slightly more powerful engine than the plane of Chris Palmer ? Or is it maybe because I didn’t have any luggage and not much fuel ?

2- In flight, I had to reduce the throttle to maybe 50% or less, else the plane would reach the yellow part of the speed gauge. Is it supposed to be that powerful ? I think the plane in the sim was easily reaching close to 100 knots with only 2.300 RPM… not too sure about the number any more, but it was not far… Maybe that’s the way it is in real life ?

3- During descent, I found it difficult to reduce my speed without reducing the engine to minimum. Even with one crank of flaps, the plane was happily cruising above the 70 knots, not willing to slow down unless I would keep level with very low throttle. It felt like the plane was missing some drag, but maybe it’s the way it should be ?

4- I had a hard time finding the correct position for my viewpoint in VR. My copilot seemed much taller than me, but on closer inspection, it seems to me that he is not seating “deep” enough in the seat. What do you think ?

That’s all  Right now I’m downloading the latest version. I love the features you added to the plane, and can’t wait to see your future versions and try out the other variants you made. Thanks again !

Yes the taildragger is a very modified C172 : it uses a very powerfull engine that is usefull for takeoff, just like the Reims Rocket is. If you give all the power in flight, you overspeed the plane.

If you want a classic C172, I made a special one requested by Chris :

https://flightsim.to/file/23624/cessna-172-angleofattack

But that’s not a taildragger (Chris’ plane isn’t)

Nb. the AOA mod is an old one based on existing G1000 or Classic cockpit : some features might not work well

Being overpowered is just one of the things that makes this aircraft so pleasant and fun to fly. Where with other aircraft you often have to deal with a lack of power, with this one you’re dealing with an excess of power.
It’s like flying an aerobatic plane.
For the throttle lever, the advice is: as needed, no matter how much it is.

To slow down, below 120knots you can use the 2nd notch of flaps (20°).
And use the side slip, which is a maneuver that puts the ailerons in the opposite position to the rudder (i.e. rudder to the left and ailerons to the right), allowing you to slow down while keeping the same altitude or to lose altitude while keeping the same speed.
It takes a bit of practice, but it’s a very rewarding experience when you get it right.
You’ll find lots of side slip tutorials on YT.

Ok I understand, thanks for the clarification.
On my side I tend to prefer the underpowered aircraft, which are more challenging to fly for me. The parts in the videos with AngleOfAttack where they take off from a gravel airfield and Chris explains how to keep the front wheel up for better acceleration, then keep in the ground effect etc… All of this is not needed with an overpowered plane, which somehow makes it less interesting for me

Then I will try the “AngleOfAttack” variant you have created, thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks for the advice, I will experiment with this, although I’m surprised about using the second crank of flaps at such high speed as 120 knots. These are stronger than I thought.
As I wrote in my previous answer, overpowered plane are “less fun” for me, but that doesn’t mean “not fun at all”
I guess it’s a matter of getting used to it, and basically my expectations were just wrong so I’ll just need to get over it

I could perform a very slow landing and that was extremely pleasant (especially with the angle of attack warning sound). I just need to adjust a bit the response curve of my throttle axis to make it less nervous, because right now it’s switching from “not enough” to “too much” a bit too fast

From the flight_model.cfg:
damaging-speed=120
blowout-speed=150

If you really want less power you can edit the engines.cfg file
decreasing max_design_mp from 54.999982 to something as 45.00 or less will help to have less “brutality”
You can also change max_rated_hp from 210 to the original 180hp
I think for you the max_design_mp param is the first one to test

New version cooking…

It’s superb ! Thank you so much.

An update is coming in with a panel rework based on the Cessna 172M; This is a little bit more realistic than a Reims Rocket panel.

so be prepared to see the gauges location to change a little.
Lights have been changed too : you can use the red roof lights by night.

This is based on the current in progress community work on :

Fantastic plane. New favorite !:star_struck:
