Cessna Citation CJ4 Issues and Support

Like others have said, after AAU1 the CJ4 controls are extremely twitchy under certain conditions. Especially during final approach, it is extremely hard to fly a stabilised approach with the proper AoA.

I have never flown anything close to that in real life, but as an experienced private pilot, I have flown numerous low-wing aircraft and I can say that ground effect has been improved, but the controls are way too sensitive. Even the autopilot struggles with an ILS approach with winds calm.

I hope the concept of control input effectiveness vs airspeed in non-FBW aircraft is well understood between the devs and there will be corrections.

This was mentioned in WT Discord so decided to bring this here just in caseā€¦ but check that in LEGS you have AUTO mode, not INHIBIT, which prevents LNV to sequence to next waypoint automatically. INHIBIT is left as active mode for example after successful landing. Remember to shut down whole aircraft fully between flights and still check sequencing mode from LEGS page.

Ok. But Is it possible to completely ā€œresetā€ the aircraft between flights? I usually start from runway to avoid cold and dark to save time.

I suppose it completely reset when you turn battery off or something. Or it wonā€™t. Maybe restart the whole flight. Or sim. Or computer. I never start from runway up&running so canā€™t answer that. Just turn off batteries etc. Then back on and check that all required things are ok or adjust them to be ok.

When seeing INHIBIT on the ground on a fresh flight starting on the runway straight from the world map, what is the world map plan that is being used?

Sequence should always be in AUTO when starting a new flight.

I now managed a successful flight with the new cj4. The approach mode works as expected (I did an RNAV approach). The only thing which confused me is that the tooltip which shows NAV mode as disabled after clicking APPR is misleading. The display panel shows the correct mode.

The new update also makes speed control of the plane easier on take off and landing, as the throttle seems more calibrated. Earlier the throttle just seemed overpowered.

I didnā€™t notice inhibit but I am getting one or two discontinues in plan when planned from world map.

I planned VOBL to VOMM flight. Didnā€™t save the plan so unable to share it here.

+1

The advanced avionics are kind of wasted unfortunately, as this is under no circumstances a stable IFR platform.
If I remember correctly, the initial release flight model had this twitchiness, and the WT-mod made it much easier to handfly.
Not being an irl-CJ4 jockey, and although the WT-mod also showed the following behaviour, I assume that these are further flaws within the flight model:

  • Thereā€™s no speed change when dropping the gear, so it seems to have far too little drag
  • The same goes for the first notch of flaps: with flaps set and gear down you have to reduce thrust nearly to idle on a 3Ā° glideslope in order to decelerate. Thatā€™s not expected bahaviour, and contradicts information from a flight report: ā€œFifty-five percent power is a great approach power setting since it brings you to just under 200, and with a notch of flaps (15) the airplane quickly slowed to 145ā€
  • On the other hand dropping the second notch of flaps is like dropping an anchor, speed reduces dramatically, accompanied by violent ballooning - in contradiction to another flight report: ā€œControl force changes while slowing and configuring for landing were minimal, the pitch trim zeroing out pitch forces. Established on ground speed, about 62% N1 was needed on both engines to hold a target indicated airspeed of 111kt (reference plus 5kt).ā€

For the time being, itā€™s back to the hangar until probably the next AAU. This bird, especially with the capabale avionics, deserves a better flight model.

Edit: On the plus side: crosswind behaviour on landing is definitely improved.

@Picka5string i asked the same question a few days ago but didnā€™t get a response. You state to request the GPU through the ATC panel. Are you seeing that available option at every airport? Because I am only seeing request pushback.

Honestly, Iā€™ve never opened the ATC panel in MFS, but itā€™s what Iā€™ve read several times around the usual places on the web.

Donā€™t hold me to this, as my memory might not be accurate, but I thought I read when AAU1 came out, Working Title modified the battery drain on the CJ4 so they didnā€™t run down as fast, also obviating the need for the GPU. Again, going from a foggy memory on this.

No, letā€™s be clear: itā€™s almost entirely working as expected, and some users donā€™t like that itā€™s more accurate to the real thing than whatever existed before. Setting aside flight model critiques, which may or may not hold water relative to the real plane.

I just had my first flight in the AAU1 CJ4 and still trying to understand all the changes. I absolutely loved the former WT mod and will attempt to adjust to the new version.
Have the following functions been eliminated?
-Altitude range banana option
-Blue dotted arrow ILS position indicators
-A Ground Speed indicator

Itā€™s in the same location as the mod, in DSPL MENU on the FMC. Weā€™ve gotten a few questions about it and Iā€™m guessing folks threw it in once in the mod and then never looked again. :slightly_smiling_face:

Ghost needles and ghost diamonds are still present, provided the airport scenery is properly configured. A number of third party airport sceneries (most really) donā€™t have this data set up correctly. This limitation is the same as appeared on the mod.

GS appears only on the co-pilot MFD. It was on the pilot MFD in the mod because we did not have the MFDs split.

Thatā€™s not what Iā€™ve read throughout this thread. Feedback to those frustrated with the more complex systems has been overwhelmingly supportive and there are many people here trying to help. It hasnā€™t turned combative at all (at least not yet  )

No one has said suck it up and fly a 172. What several people have said is it would be helpful to go back to less complicated planes and systems, become more familiar and comfortable with them, and then keep advancing to more complex systems.

Letā€™s say, fly a 152 in VFR and just take off, fly a circuit, and land. When thatā€™s good, do the same in a 172. When thatā€™s good, load up an IFR flight plan in the 172 G1000 and learn how to use the NXi to fly via instruments. Maybe next take that knowledge to the TBM and learn the G3000. Then youā€™ll be in a great position to move to the next level of complexity, which is learning a flight system like the CJ4.

There are definitely some jumps in there, but if you master NAV mode, HDG mode, FLC, approaches, etcā€¦ in a simpler 172 G1000, then you donā€™t need to re-learn those on the more advanced planes. You can instead focus on the differences.

Many thanks for your fast reply. Re: the bananaā€¦guilty as charged. Mustā€™ve clicked every button looking for it except the DSPL one. Ghost needlesā€¦indeed, was flying into a TP airport at the time. Will try with a default one. GSā€¦again, guilty! Hardly ever look at the co-pilot side. Keep up the great work. Your involvement in this thread answering questions and offering tips is deeply appreciated!

@Picka5string no worries. I heard the ATC panel suggestion many times but I am not seeing the GPU option. Another question I have now. If I just have battery and Avionics on, shouldnā€™t I see amps and voltage on the status page for the battery?

You got me againā€¦LOL. Iā€™ve never looked. When I load in, I adjust fuel, and then start the engines. I would think the BATT field would show current amps and volts, unless that just shows recharging? Maybe itā€™s in extensive CJ4 documentation PDF? It can be downloaded from the Working Title discord channel.

Update on the GPU though. I did find out that not every airport in MFS has GPU services, so that might be why the GPU isnā€™t available in ATC menu?

@Picka5string yeah that confused me too. It shows DC amps which, unless I am wrong, that means a GPU is connected LOL. I will take a look at the documentation. Thanks.
