Sometimes games that are using high amounts of GPU utilisation can overheat causing CTD, and AMD particularly the 5700 run very hot under load which can cause crashing, if the junction temp on the AMD gpu gets to hot it can cause a complete shut down/ crashes, which is why i went watercooled option never goes above 60 whereas before on the blowerfans junction temp can reach 80c. so it’s worth checking what the GPU temp is at the time of crash.
from what iv’e heard the vsync is more like half-sync, ill try again with Hyperthreading disabled but really we shouldn’t have to mess with our systems to make a game work.
Iv’e underclocked mine and the Vram clock speed is stock, though i have run it higher and it made no difference in when it crashed. it’s definately something in the settings in the game, ill try no live map data see if that stops the crashing.
80°C is totally fine for a GPU. Shouldn’t cause any kind of CTD whatsoever.
It’s even far below the temperature where the GPU would throttle down to avoid overheating which would happen instead of CTD in case your temps get really high.
You would think that but the AMD drivers on a stock fan i had massive issues with crashes, unless you manually set the fan curve to above 100% when it reaches 80c. loads of people had the same issue with AMD drivers and MSI afterburner
Tried disabling Hyperthreading no luck to depart from Heathrow. Got to the end to the blue bar and boom black screen and CTD
I believe my CTD were linked to my XMP profile used to OC my ram. I am running AUTO @ 2133mhz and seems better. Need to do a bit more flying to confirm my fix.
Can confirm its an issue on MFS side because I ran CPU + GPU + RAM benchmark using my 3200mhz XMP profile for 5 hrs and no issues
I just wrote a summary of crash fixes and overclocking is indeed one of the causes. Feel free to check out this post for more info and details: [FIXED] Random CTDs due to internet and hardware issues
I finally was able to get to the main menu. Now appears that the game is working as it should. I think there is multiple causes causing the issues. I reinstalled the whole game and c++ two times for manage to get the game to work. So in my case, I assumed that the other two times that i installed the game, I got a bad decompression of the files. I hope that MS fixed all issues and repair all theses bugs. It’s all software related. I Still gets some ctds when i fly in over populated areas, but it’s better then nothing i guess
in Win 10 search in the taskbar type in ADVANCED SYSTEM PROPERTIES
under system properties window click on SETTINGS under performance
click the ADVANCED tab
under virtual memory click on CHANGE
i use a custom size of 26000
Reconfirmed then, as I connected a wireless gamepad via Bluetooth, and after disconnecting it, the CTDs happened until now… I turned off Bluetooth, and the same.
You should report that. I know others have including myself. It’s a bug and the only thing they have on their “known issues” list is “Crashes can occur when unplugging or plugging in two or more peripherals at once during any loading screen.”
At one point, I thought bluetooth devices where on the known issues list, can’t find it.
The more reports on it, the better.

I started having CTDs upon loading into UK and surrounding airports (Dublin, Calais, EHAM). Strangely not the northeenmost UK airports like Sumburgh. The CTDs didn’t occur if I turned Bing Data World Graphics off.
I tried everything suggested by MSFS, including reinstall. Didn’t fix the issue. I then set global rendering quality to “low-end” and CTDs where gone.
I did file a bug report. I’m now in the process of increasing graphics settings gradually. And just by increasing the terrain level of detail to 100, the CTD re-appeared.
MSFS keeps CTD when im about to hit the checkpoint STAVE flying from CYYC - CYVR…no errors or anything and nothing in Event Viewer…soooooooo annoying…its like CYVR is cursed
Bought the game a few days ago. Constant crashes.
Dual Xeon E5 CPUs
128GB RAM
GeForce 2070 Super
SSDs
I’ve had freezes during the loading screen a couple times. But it usually happens either as soon as a flight loads, or during some completely random interval mid-flight. Freezes for a few seconds, then crashes to desktop. Everything’s up-to-date, PC is rock solid on everything else.
yes, I have had BSODS as well as CTDS. Although no BSODs since I reseated my ram and got clean tests from Memtest86 5 times in a row.
First time poster here. Here is my setup. The 5700XT is 8 days old. The rest was purchased last year when I got on the Alpha.
So I was having BSOD. Sound locks up… makes a loud noise… and the machine will not reboot it is locked. Could be after 5 hours of VFR flying with AP on. Could be 45 seconds doing stunts at salt lake. Intersperced within that is a bunch of CTDS. My machine was pretty clean to begin with but I formatted the drive completely and reinstalled windows. Ran all updates then just installed FS2020. NO NONSENSE. CTDS and BSODS still happened. Then I started doing ram tests with Memtest86 First test I got 7 errors. (Not sure that is real or not) because I went and unseated 2/4 sticks of ram. The next memtest was fine. I put all the memory back in… no errors. 5 tests no errors. I got excited. Fired up FS 2020… Ive been getting CTDS. sometimes in 45 seconds some times after hours of flights. Sometimes I will finish a 3 hour flight with ZERO problems. I dont get it.
I was about to return my 5700xt to microcenter and get a 2070 instead until I saw this thread. So far no BSODs but I DO get CTDs like you all describe.
Here is my setup
UserBenchmarks: Game 97%, Desk 89%, Work 96%
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 2700X - 86.4%
GPU: AMD RX 5700-XT - 107.3%
SSD: Samsung 840 Evo 500GB - 104.2%
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 1TB - 82.4%
RAM: G.SKILL F4 DDR4 3200 C16 4x8GB - 114.7%
MBD: Gigabyte B450M DS3H
ONe thing is I cannot turn off XMP… my windows install bluescreens.
I saw that as a suggestion. Some guy on youtube that was my age (50) was ranting about it not making any performance difference AND it causes a lot of instability with AMD stuff.
So I may try that… turn off XMP and reinstall windows.
I wish I could save the FS 2020 install this 4 hour install is a pain my (insert word)
OH and I bought Red Dead Redemption and have been playing it on Ultra this whole weekend. No problems there other than some task switching CTDs from the game but that is a documented bug and I just did the work around.
well reinstalling fS2020 before the microcenter 14 day return policy expires.
Sorry, i’m a bit of a noob. But where are these C++ files located so they can be deleted? And there’s several links to download C++ with the link you provided. Which one is to be installed? Just Visual Studio 2015, 2017 and 2019? And what’s the difference between x64,x86 and ARM64?
Thanks
First download the VS C++ Redistributable Libraries from Microsoft (the x64 and x86) from:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2977003/the-latest-supported-visual-c-downloads
-
x64 is for 64 bit apps/programs (download)
-
x86 is for 32 bit apps/programs (download)
(The ARM64 is generally for phones, tablets, some laptops, etc.) - don’t download that one
To uninstall the VS C++ Libraries 2015-2019, need to go to Windows 10 Settings, APPS and assure Apps & Features are selected. On the right of that page is “Related Settings”, click on Programs and Features. Uninstall both x64 and x86. Only uninstall the VS C++ with dates of 2015-2019, the other leave there. (see attached image)
Then install the 2 files you downloaded.
After installing, restart your PC.
Thank you for this, it’s very helpful. I’ll try this and see if it works.
Does it matter if I don’t have all of the older C++ versions? I don’t have any of 2010,2012, and I also don’t have 2008 x64 (I only have 2008 x86).
No, it doesn’t matter. Those older libraries get installed based on what software you have installed.
MSFS, at this time, needs those 2015-2019 ones (which is rolled into one bundle).
I have the same issue and I running also bootcamp on an iMac Pro. I tried to lower the graphics settings, “fresh” installation of Windows 10 but this doesn’t work. Who can / should fix this: AMD, Microsoft or Apple?
