Discussion: April 13 Live Dev Q&A

@Jummivana
Hi Jayne,
Jörg got distracted when talking about the DEM resolution of WU4 and skipped Luxembourg (I suppose the LUX part of BENELUX isn’t that important  )

Would you mind asking them what resolution we have in the DEM for Luxembourg? I have done some tests with the drone and it is insanely good! Better than 1m in some areas I am sure, could you maybe confirm?

@Jummivana When will the Q&A be posted on YouTube as it normally seems to be posted a day after the twitch stream but nothing has been posted yet?

We should also remember what the updates include, do you know of any other company who produces a product and continues to update it regularly with absolutely tons of new features at no cost to the users.
I realise there are things yet to be resolved but we should possibly be a bit more grateful for these updates.
Just my opinion of course.

I completely agree. Just look at American / Euro truck simulator.
New area / state? → paid DLC.

MS/Asobo could have just done the launch globe, and left it to third party payware developers from that point onwards. Yet they continue to bring us free world updates. It’s amazing.

There was a question planned concerning the annoying pop up window at the end of a flight, with the proposition to get rid of it.
That question was eluded in favor of the logbook bug…
I’d really like they get rid of that window that ruins the experience and immersion.

Additional content for free doesn’t really mean anything if it prevents me from using the software I paid for (the original MSFS Premium Deluxe) and bricks the $2000 worth of cockpit gear I’d been happily using prior to the update.

I’d be quite satisfied with the content (and performance) I originally purchased last August and buying any addons if it meant the software still ran the way it did for me at launch.

That’s sounds odd, I have a similar setup (from your description) and I don’t have performance issues any different to when I installed the first beta.
Of course there are areas like London where the performance figures take a dive, but that’s photogrammetry, which I turn off. I don’t like how it looks and that wasn’t included in the launch product anyway.
If people try to run it on low end systems, I would expect poor performance but it sounds like you have a decent system. If your system is bricked, I would try to find out the cause.
MSFS is certainly heavy on resources but many people here run it fine. I personally don’t run on ULTRA, but mainly on High for just about everything. Did you clear your cache’s and reset your community folder before the update? what settings are you running?

For those of us experiencing these issues, World Update 3 seems to be turning point where we went from a beautifully performing sim to garbage performance. Since then, I’ve had to lower settings to maintain a playable frame rate when I was hitting 40+ on all ultra @ 1440 prior.

I don’t use cache, my community folder is currently empty, and since the hotfix from 2 weeks back, switching from low to ultra has no effect on performance. It was working acceptably after that hotfix, but took a dive again after SU4.

Now I’m main thread limited in all cases, even though the main thread of my CPU is only seeing 70-80% use at most.

I don’t pretend to have a clue what the real effect of all the setting do, or what is changing from version to version. What MSFS’s CPU & GPU usage displays, or what sliders are really doing, and how they may be being changed so that high settings are not really as high as they were before ? , really does not matter to me, and is not something to get obsessed over.

My Historically HIGH End PC, that was purchased at great expense for FSX, won’t even run MSFS, so I ended up getting a small, modest Gaming laptop that will run MSFS.

I do not expect miracles from it, and I am therefore not disappointed.

I get 30-40 FPS almost everywhere on a Larger 27" 1080P Monitor, which is quite sufficient for me to practice real works procedures, within the simulation ability of the Sim.

I favor better realism and accuracy of Functionality, over the Eye candy of the scenery, but find the Eye candy more than adequate for my needs.

Yes, others have different hopes and aspirations for MSFS - and that’s fine.

While I am far from 100% happy with the incorrect and missing functionality of certain aspects of the simulation, I chose to embrace the GOOD parts, while giving “reasonably” restrained feedback, on what I find lacking.

That being said, the Busted WASM is Most unfortunate", but is something that I would expect to be fixed soon - it will take as long as it takes - so why get overly upset - it won’t do any good !!

And Please Note Everyone .. ATIS should NOT give wind speed in ft/sec !!!

I run a 32" 4K monitor and get 25-40 frames just about everywhere, except London and New York, But as I said before, I put that down to photogrammetry, which I don’t consider to be an improvement.

Perhaps you could try with a local cache and see if that improves your performance, if it does it could be simply the massive drain on the Microsoft servers.

I guess the point is we all run different hardware and have different demands from the simulator. Unlike N6722C, I absolutely love to see the wonders of the scenery combined with the weather and lighting. But each to his own, I hope you get it sorted. Sorry I can’t be more help. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Since the world update, I’m barely breaking 20 fps at my local airport, which is autogen. And there’s no PG for my area. It’s all auto-gen as well. Cache will make no difference.

I also tried from Naples Municipal (KAPF). I have the add-on from the marketplace, so it’s a custom airport in a PG area. I was seeing the same numbers as at my local airport.

So it really has nothing to do with cache or PG or any of the streaming data per se. It’s something tied to CPU usage as best as I can tell, because I’m being main thread limited when my main thread isn’t anywhere near being fully utilized.

In any case, I’m dead in the water until they fix the WASM issue anyway. I won’t be using the sim until that gets fixed. Then I can work on trying to see what the performance issues may be tied to.

Right now, I’m tired of trying to diagnose issues to make the sim playable. I’m the lead dev in a programming shop. I do enough of that kind of stuff on a daily basis. When I get home, I’d like to be able to fly, not spend more time doing the same thing I just left behind at work.

BTW, I should say I do appreciate the suggestions. Thank you for that…

I fly VFR and low level IFR. I love me some good scenery. But like N6722C, I’m content with running at reduced settings. I don’t need to be running at 4K Ultra to get the best experience. I’m also not a real pilot, so I also don’t need 100% flight model accuracy. What I do want though, is a believable flight model and a smooth, reproducible experience like I used to get before WU3, and I want systems depth that I can use my cockpit setup with for a realistic experience. I used to get both of those. But not any more. In fact, I don’t have any experience at all right now unfortunately. :frowning:

I guess you are one of the “MSFS pilots that is being left behind” !!

I’m am real world pilot, but I also don’t need 100% flight model accuracy.
What I am looking for is correct functionality of planes’ systems, and a “reasonably” correct flight model, and an immersive & realistic environment to practice CRM
– ( Not sCRuM ) .

It would appear so.

Rockstar Games and Grand Theft Auto V is a great example of this, and probably the model to aspire to match. That title continues to grow massively since it was released 8 years ago, and paying extra is not required to utilize the expansions. GTA5 has had its fair share of bugs, glitches, and server woes for sure, but I don’t remember it being released in a half finished/alpha level state and being plagued by regressive updates for months. To be fair, Rockstar is much larger than Asobo, so it might just be a case of Asobo being in over their heads.

I was worried Flight Simulator was going to be another No Man’s Sky at launch, another game that was released in a terribly unfinished state by devs way in over their heads who were the victims of marketing hype. But it turns out to be another example of a dev team and company getting their stuff together and cranking out massive, free expansions over the following years.

Flight Simulator is probably in the middle between those examples, and will likely see significant improvement over the following years. I’m hopeful that once the XBox/DX12 update is out the door and their dev team has expanded, we’ll see them turning the corner and climbing out of the hole in which they’ve dug themselves into.

I´m beyond happy knowing that an ATR-72 is coming to the simulator.
Really looking forward to use it in a Binter Canarias livery for Canary-Islands-Hopping.

Those short flights to beautiful volcanic destinations will be great! Now, if Aerosoft releases more Canary Islands airports as good as La Palma and La Gomera, I will jump in my seat!

I was just able to watch the Live Dev Q&A. Overall I feel pretty optimistic about the direction of this project. Jorg and Martial are obviously very passionate about Flight Simulator. They seem genuinely concerned and aware of the issues community members are experiencing and appear motivated to address them.

I have to say though, someone needs to get Sebastian an energy drink or two. That guy looked like he couldn’t be bothered. Any topic that was brought up to him, he just shook his head, shrugged his shoulders or had no clue what anyone was talking about.

Seb usually looks tired but if you have watched any previous Q&A, Martial had to actually tell Seb to keep his replies short, because he would go on a tangents very often, overexplaining everything. Seb is very interested and passionate, I assure you.

I would actually like if there was a live session with Seb where he dives into technicalities of MSFS, all by himself so he can go on his tangents. It’s great listening to him.

Jan Mayen is pretty good already - cool if they make it better though!

I think they also spent about 5 or 6 years developing it - which I think is quite a bit longer than MSFS, although I could be wrong. The technology behind GTA5 isn’t as ground breaking either, but that game (and all Rockstat games like RDR 2) are poliched beyond belief.
