FlyByWire Simulations | A380X alpha | Discussion

I loaded the 4K version on MSFS2020 with the following machine specs:

Windows 11 Pro for Workstations
MSFS 2020 on DX12
AMD Radeon Pro W6800X 32GB
96GB RAM (6x16GB)
Intel Xeon W3275M 28 cores

It gave me no dramas with any crash to desktop when sitting at the airport but I did notice some slight stutters when panning the view around from outside. Inside it seemed smooth, but I only had a momentary look at it while doing other things.

Make sure your parking brake is released prior to pushback. Also if you have GSX installed then it could be a conflicting issue. Don’t forget it’s also the first Alpha publicly released, and there are plenty of improvements to come

You have as much VRAM as I have system RAM

It’s nice but lots of switches/buttons not yet implemented. Good first release though.

I’m using a 3090 with DX11 and 4K textures everywhere and have had no issues. However my VRAM was sitting at 17GB even with 4K install option textures and 4K livery. I also run at 4K output res.

For anyone wanting a few extra FPS I can recommend using lossless scaling app and dropping your in game actual FPS to something your CPU can easily handle. Mine is actually set to 20FPS (VSYNC 1/3 RR 60Hz) in game which scales up wonderfully to a smooth/solid 60FPS at 4K output, and it allows me to not drop my TLOD too much (150) and have AI traffic.

The lossless scaling app is the biggest bang for £5 I’ve ever spent in this sim.

I couldn’t get GSX to work last night as my gate was ‘too small’, for services, but the pushback tool in the EFB works fine.

I test flew this last night, EGLL to EGCC. I went straight for the 4k option because… well… 3070 life. Also loaded up with FSLTL. Everything went well apart from me trying to fly it like an A320, and also getting completely lost at EGLL. Then realising default ATC was nil, until I saw @Marklar666 post about turning the radio on haha.

Take off was smooth, but trying to activate autopilot wasn’t. Eventually, I was able to get it to follow the flightplan and SID constraints.

Performance was about as good as you could imagine for EGLL, but perfectly fine for me.

Cruise and descent, well all was well until I hit 8000ft at DAYNE, then for some reason she went ALPHA floor on me. After fighting with it over the Peak District (Lord only knows what the residents of Derbyshire must have thought!), it found the ILS for Manchester and the rest was great. Handflying this big bird is a joy, but watch that flare!

Much more practice needed I reckon.

I am also using the 4K version. As a comparison, I generally get about 36-42 with the Fenix A320 . The A380 is lower at 28-32 which is not ideal but perfectly usable, (this is with a RTX 3090) . I am working on the fact that this will improve as FBW tweak the model over the next weeks / months.
Settings set to DX12, DLSS ( quality), refections all on low , clouds High, grass low, everything else on high or ultra. Quest 3 , with OpenXRT resolution set to 3500 .

Same here. Give me a ZIP file. I’ll take care of the rest.

Just jumped into my first flight, and is definitely an incredible work of art, but when programing the fms, there wasnt anyway to calculate the V speeds on the t.o perf page (clicking on them twice like the A32NX, doesnt work). In the documentation, it just mentions thats where to enter them, with out saying how to get it. Same goes for the zfw.cg%. Theres doesnt appear to be a calculated flex temp either, but that doesnt effect the flight as much, i just put 53C in there to get going

The inibuilds has it in the tablet but couldnt see it in there, on this one.

Is this still WIP or am i just dumb and missed it completely?

I did not find it as well but you can calculate it in Simbrief.

Er…it’s alpha.

Are there any hacks to centre the default external MSFS 2020 camera view so the plane is in the middle of the screen and not off the bottom edge of the view? I have the top half of the window empty. With a normal plane not so bad but this thing is enormous.

I know Microsoft wants everyone to see the beautiful empty blue sky but surely there must be a way to change it?

Looking at the starting guides on the FlyByWire site, thank heavens I’ve got multiple screens and another computer nearby… Too much jumping backwards and forwards between different pages.

This morning I finally figured out the airport GSX profile changes required for enabling services for the A380 at EGPF Gate 30 (where it docks IRL). It took a while (as I am a newbie at tweaking GSX).

It involved going into the GSX airport config editor and changing a few size values and switching the gate over from MEDIUM to HEAVY, as well as going into the 3D parking position editor to modify the front wheel parking position and the parking radius. This puts customised position coordinates into the .ini file for the airport, and allows GSX services to become available. You then apply/save these changes back to the airport gsx profile ini file.

It seems to be working now. It’s admittedly going to be a bit of a pain having to do this for many other 3rd airports though, as their GSX profiles and gates may have never been configured with an A380 in mind.

Jaw dropped and then some!

I went through the cabin - this looks extremely familiar to me with the wood trim and lashings of gold everywhere and the ghaf motifs. I travel with Emirates a lot.

Starting it up and cranking the throttles up, it sounds so real, from outside and inside. Just amazed - and it’s free!

As @dxtr said, there is no takeoff calculations in the plane yet. They mention that in the docs, and yes, they say to use the performance calculator recently added into Simbrief.

I was perplexed for a while too until I remembered reading that in their Alpha release notes.

When I updated to nVidia and bought a used 3090, it was in anticipation of the new ray tracing in MSFS2024. Little did I know I would need 24GB of VRAM to fly the A380X Alpha release!

Thanks very much for a brilliant aircraft. Your hard work and the time spent to get this giant to us is very much appreciated. AND ITS FREEWARE.

How to initially hide the cabin to increase the frame rate a little.

(Press the button behind the cockpit to show it, Change the function to reverse)

Open the following xml file:

model/A380_COCKPIT.xml

Search for the following string:

A380X_CABIN_HIDDEN

Change the value from 0 to 1.

<VISIBILITY_CODE>(L:A380X_CABIN_HIDDEN, bool) 1 ==</VISIBILITY_CODE>

It runs okay in 5K resolution on my 28 Core Xeon W3275M 2019 Mac Pro with a Radeon Pro W6800 32GB card. Frame rates are okay, no stuttering. And it looks stunning.

In VR it’s incredlble! I’ve been in A380s before many times in real life but never bothered to look inside the flight deck. It really feels so modern.

However I ended up with a crash to desktop. So I’ll disconnect one of the 5K screens (I have two of them each at 5120x2880). It tends to be more reliable with just one connected.

This addon might just bring me back to regular use of MSFS.
