Hey, I’ve been troubleshooting and I think I’ve found the source of the stuttering that’s been making the sim pretty much unplayable. It looks like NVIDIA’s Frame Generation is the problem for me. I tested it on and off, and honestly, there’s no difference in FPS—it sticks at 40 FPS regardless.
It seems like the feature just isn’t working properly, and instead of boosting performance, it’s creating those annoying stutters.
Hopefully, this helps anyone else facing the same issue. If anyone figures out why Frame Generationis causing that, let me know. Thanks!
Frame Gen works, it is just that the ingame fps counter does not count the extra generated fps. Just leaving it off is not a good solution, they should just fix their stuff.
I know that was true in FS20. But I’ve read that it DOES show FG FPS in FS24.
Do I have faulty info?
I can’t test because my 3090 Ti doesn’t support FG.
I’m also having this issue today, my new PC arrived today consisting of an RTX 5080 and Ryzen 7 9800x3d, I came from a 4070 with 5700x so as you can imagine my expectations were to have drastic performance improvements..
To my surprise, I load into my first flight at the gate and am met by the most immense stutters, the worst ive ever encountered in 2024 and rendering the sim unplayable. I could not get past the point of pushing back from the gate and have been having to restart the sim over and over since 2pm today as the stutters always end with the frame gen bug..
I am assuming this is a driver issue as on my old rig 3 days ago I wasn’t having this issue at all.
So it’s a tiny bit complicated. To turn on the in-sim FPS display, you have to turn on Dev Mode. Frame Generation frames do not show with Dev Mode active. However, you can turn Dev Mode off while the FPS display is active and it will remain active. At that point, the FPS display will be accurate and will count generated frames.
And yes, frame gen does work in FS2024 just fine most of the time. I have had one instance where it became stuttery and seemed out of synch, and none of the usual workarounds fixed it (Toggling it off and on, setting Vsync on and off, ALT-ENTER to windowed mode and back …) I had to restart the sim to correct it. However, that has only occurred for me on one occasion, I think during the first build of the SU1 beta.
But what about apps like RTSS with MSI Afterburner? This and the in-game counter will show the same FPS most of the time, and then sometimes it shows the double FPS (with no visual change). On 2020 it consistently showed the double number, for me.
MSI Afterburner shows framegen frames perfectly for me. All you need to do see is go to some complicated airport, load up a bunch of AI traffic and see your frames dip. Then click your mouse into a second display or bring another program to the foreground, which will cause framegen to pause with sim in the background. As soon as you click back into the sim there will be a quick judder as framegen kicks back in and the FPS displayed by Afterburner will jump right back up.
Yeah it’s an interesting quirk for sure. I typically don’t use the Dev Mode FPS counter because it’s a pretty obtrusive display and honestly much of the info isn’t useful to me on a regular basis. If I was an aircraft or scenery developer and needed that info to design and optimize my work, it would probably be great.
But as a simmer, when I monitor peformance I use MSI Afterburner customized to show just the info I want: CPU average load, CPU package temperature, GPU average load, GPU core temperature, and FPS. I can record almost any sensor I want from my system with it, log it, graph it, whatever, but the five stats above are all I need to be able to check as a user looking to monitor or optimize my flying experience.
And yes, MSI Afterburner accurately displays FPS either with or without using frame generation.
Same here, since updating FG and DLSS files with DLSS Swapper and with the newest driver 572.42 I have massiv stutters at T/O and also during the rest of the flight. Even the sounds cut a bit like there are spikes in performance, which shouldn’t be an issue. 4090 and 7950X3D 64 RAM
For a new PC, did you update the bios and chipset drivers (bios from your motherboard website and chipset driver from AMD website)? That’s very important and can help performance. Also on the nvidia app (download it) you should make sure that the option for gameplay recording is turned off. And of course make sure the latest nvidia driver is loaded (they had a hot fix driver last week that is now in the nvidia app as an option to download). The stutters and single digit framerate are not right and indicate a problem somewhere. Online videos of msfs gameplay with the 5080 and 5090 look very smooth and stutter free so I hope you can get it sorted.
This is 100% a driver issue and the drivers causing issues with 5080 cards because if I play the sim (msfs 2024) on my 4070ti super, I don’t have the issue but on my 5080 the sim is unplayable. There’s definitely something in the drivers that is not compatible with 5080 and I assume 5090 aswell. Needs sorting ASAP
The thing that makes me still use 2020 are the horrible stutters in 2024, mainly when rolling on the runway (both takeoff and landing) or during short final. It’s 100% killing immersion! I hope they fix this issue with the upcoming SU2.
It seems like FG is behaving as if it is tabbed out. When I press Alt and Enter twice to switch between windowed mode and fullscreen, it temporarily works but then cuts out again. I hope this issue can be fixed, as it’s quite annoying to have to constantly tab in and out. But this may be a temp fix until this is fixed.
I’ve been having trouble with stutters for months now. I’d pretty much given up and assumed I’d have to accept them (I9-10850k / 4070ti / 32gig). I was also having trouble with the screen freezing when I applied Reshade and thought what the heck, I’ll ask ChatGPT if it knew anything. Lo and behold, it knew of the problem and suggested I go back to NVidia driver 546.33 to resolve the Reshade lockup. I thought that was a bit extreme, but once I did that, the Reshade problem is gone AND my stutters are all but gone as well.
If you don’t mind “talking” to AI, I’d suggest just opening a session and typing something like “I have a I9-10850K and a 4070ti and I’m having stutters. What do you suggest I do?” and see what it says.
