Extreme flickering and stuttering with Frame Generation

ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Description of the issue:
a few minutes after starting a flight performance gets extremely bad and I have huge stutters and flickers when panning the camera. A video is attached below.
It happens especially at bigger airports or 3rd party airports, which have more performance requirements obviously.

Similar issues were already reported with MSFS2020, but it was played down and associated to DX12 Beta.
Extreme flickering and stuttering since SU14 (seems related to Frame Generation) - Bug Reporting Hub / Install, Performance & Graphics - Microsoft Flight Simulator Forums

Stuttering when dlss frame generation is on, and huge fps drops at the airports - Bug Reporting Hub / Install, Performance & Graphics - Microsoft Flight Simulator Forums

Well, MSFS2024 does only offer DX12 and it is not beta anymore.

[PC Only] Did you remove all your community mods/add-ons? If yes, are you still experiencing the issue?
No, because I need downloaded 3rd party airports to fly, the game won’t let me load any streamed airport in a reasonable time, especially a bigger one…

FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

How often does this occur for you (Example: Just once, every time on sim load, intermittently)? Everytime at Drzewiecki EPRZ with the A400M, after a few minutes

REPRODUCTION STEPS

Please list clear steps you took in order to help our test team reproduce the same issue:

  1. Load flight at EPRZ with A400M at Gate 7
  2. Prepare for flight, set everything up
  3. After a few minutes the performance degrades and the flickering starts
  4. Turn Frame Generation off to see issue dissapear immediately
  5. Turn Frame Generation on again to see issue appear again after a few minutes.

YOUR SETTINGS

If the issue still occurs with no mods and add-ons, please continue to report your issue. If not, please move this post to the User Support Hub.

[PC Only] Are you using Developer Mode or have you made any changes to it?

I set my motion blur to off. It helped most of the time. Sometimes jittery, but then I restart frame gen and it helps.

I have the same problem, 7950x3D, 64GB RAM, 4090… How can we solve this issue? We have to turn off frame gen?

Wow, how much better should our hardware be to play the game without such issues. Not too much to ask to being able to play the game in 4K with Frame Gen with such a PC :sob:

Really seems we have to turn of Frame Gen… unfortunately today I found that Lossless Scaling (separate app) is not really working well with MSFS2024, at least when I tried it…

I’ve had that problem before on occasions, I just alt+enter to go in windowed mode and back and it stops it for the whole session.

I had this issue only in the FBW A380 in MSFS2020, the rest of the time it was always working perfectly. Now since MSFS2024 I’m having it constantly. So in other words we can’t use frame gen… great.

Will try it next time, thanks.
But for now I am reverting back to MSFS2020 anyhow.

I think it has to do with VRAM being full. But when it does not even work on a 4080 and a 4090, something is wrong with the game… there is not really a better card with more VRAM to be had right now…

I’m having the same issue. My thoughts it was caused by running out of vRAM?

I still have 12gb of VRAM free on my 4090 when it happens

I really thought it was the rendering getting out of sync frame wise with the frame gen dll and when it happened to me for the first time I automatically hit windowed mode without thinking and it stopped it.

Definitely a bug with their frame gen implementation, no other game have I seen this happen. They should be able to fix it. Shouldn’t happen in the first place.

Good to hear, I don’t play many other games on PC but have not seen this before either. It also happened in MSFS2020 where it was introduced with SU14.

Back then I was told DX12 was beta. Now it is the official way so I hope they quickly fix it,

Maybe it helps the team with solving it, the reference to my MSFS2020 bug ticket is Request #203990.

I was told in December 2023:

I can provide this as feedback to the dev team, but DX12 is still technically in beta development so for now either disable frame generation or switch to the stable build DX11.

I am so tired of this. Why even create bug reports in the first place if nothing is taken seriously. If they had looked at it back then, we would not have the same bug in 2024

For now, IME, Lossless Scaling is working quite well, and it is quite inexpensive on Steam. Also, it works well in conjunction with Frame Generation when Frame Generation is working.

That doesn’t fix your FG issue, and IME, Lossless Scaling isn’t quite as good as FG when it works, but as a stopgap while we wait for a patch it is worth a look.

I tried lossless scaling and it was hit and miss to get it working properly for me, I kept getting the main screen of 2 freezing, I had to keep stopping the app, restarting it and it happen again when I moved my head while using head tracking.

That is annoying! At least at the price, it is not a big loss. Fast camera movements do introduce more artifacting IME and head tracking might add to that, but at least the program doesn’t crash on me.

In any case, this FG issue looks very fixable. I just have no clue if NVIDIA or Asobo are the ones who need to fix it.

Voted. The flickering is unplayable for me it’s so severe, I also find even after I turn off FG it persists until I restart the game.

This is the exact same issue I had with DX12 FG in 2020. I was really hoping it would be fixed.

Turn off and turn on again FG fix the problem, but is annoying doing this every time the game breaks the FG sync.

This is true but when it was there once, it often starts again after ten seconds. And doing the workaround every ten seconds is not a good solution.
It was mentioned here that switching to windowed mode and back may help as well, so I will try this next time. Won’t be touching MSFS2024 before the next patch though.
