I made a site for sharing flight plans with cool scenery

Hello everyone,

I’ve been flying in Flight Simulator forever, but I never know where to fly. I see people sharing screenshots online of all these cool places but don’t really know where to actually fly to find some of those cool sights.

To help, I’ve made a new website for sharing flight plans. This site is very scenery-focused to help you search by the kind of scenery you’d like to see in a flight. The searching is primarily by flight time, scenery, and region, though you can also search by airport ID and keywords in descriptions.

The site also allows you to make a list of flight plans you’d like to try. Create an account to be able to star interesting flight plans you come across. Once starred, you can check them off on your dashboard and it’ll keep a log of the dates you’ve completed those flights in case you want to go back to them.

I’ve uploaded a few flight plans, but need the community to help out with populating this to make it useful! If you’ve got some cool flight plans or know of some cool areas to fly it would be great if you could submit some flight plans to the site. You can upload PLN or FLT files and add links to any recommended scenery or add-ons you think people might want for the flight.

Please let me know of any feedback you have for this, if you run into any problems, and how it could be made more useful for everyone.

Check it out at https://worldtour.flights

Thanks!

The site looks nice. Bookmarked. Thanks!

There’s not much content on there right now because I don’t know where the cool places to fly are (hence the reason for the site). Any contributions to help populate the site with data would help make this much more useful for everyone.

This could potentially be very useful if you manage to get some good contributors, I’m always searching for new scenery based flights myself, site looks clean and easy to use, will keep an eye on it.

I think op is specifically referring to flight plans though rather than just locations

You’ve done a fine job setting the website up. No CTD’s! It looks nice.

I am totally new to the flight sim. Where are the xml/pln files stored at on my computer?

I did start a WWT last weekend and will post legs of it up there to your site. I am in NewFoundLand right now and headed up to Greenland tomorrow.

MODERATOR EDIT:
Removed a link that no longer exists.

When you make a flight plan you can save a PLN file using the button at the bottom of the screen.

When you’re in-flight you can save a FLT file, which is a bit more of a snapshot of your current situation, including your exact location, weather, aircraft, etc.

Both store waypoint information and can be parsed by the site, but something like an FLT might be more useful if you wanted to set up something like a landing challenge or wanted to share a flight path with particular time or weather configurations.

In response to some of the earlier posts above, I think this is different for a few reasons:

  • I hope that people will upload screenshots, allowing users to see what it actually looks like in-game. This also lets you browse a bit more visually and let an image catch your eye to inspire the flight.
  • Even with all those locations they have pinned I still wouldn’t really know where to go or how to get to those locations, and figuring all that out can be challenging.
  • Contributors can recommend scenery for specific flights. There’s a lot of freeware and paid scenery being put up, and some flight areas are exceptional if you have the right add-ons. This site will help people find suggested scenery to use with the flights and then have the flight plans to take advantage of it.
  • You can star flight plans you’re interested in and then check them off your list once you’ve flown them.
  • I think we have better searching if you’re looking for something in particular. This will be very useful once people have uploaded some flight plans.

For me, having a real start and finish to a flight, like a set of objectives, motivates me to do the flight a lot more. Just taking off to sight-see and then land at whatever airport is nearby when I’m done isn’t really motivating for whatever reason. It also means you don’t see some of the out-of-the way things which are really cool, since you may not want to stray far from an airport unless you want to just quit mid-air at some point (but who would want to skip landing?)

This could also be really good for sharing flight plans for community events.

Very cool site. I’m working on something similar that lets you put in parameters (distance, ILS landing avail, airport size, hard/soft runway, continent/country/region, AV GAS available, min runway length, etc.) and it creates bunch of random flights matching the search criteria. Though I like your idea of crowd sourcing it. Ultimately I like it to talk to MSFS via simconnect and monitor/grade your selected flight. maybe some other “mini-games”. Be interesting to possibly collaborate together…

this is a fantastic idea, great work mate!

FYI spelling error on home page: It’s “Oceania” not “Oceana”.

I clicked on all flight paths and it only listed three - the Pyramids, Florida Keys and Sydney Opera House. Is that all at this stage?

Nice functional design of the site by the way. ~

Fixed! Thanks!

I added a couple more flight plans I did tonight, but yeah, there’s not a lot there right now. I really need some community support to make this great. The whole problem is that I don’t know where to fly, so I can’t fill this myself!

Hi great idea and site! I’d be happy to contribute to the site from a West of Scotland perspective where I stay. We have some lovely scenery and some not so lovely weather on occasion!! How would I get any FLP’s / screen grabs over to you?

John

Looks great, nice design … :ok_hand:

Awesome, great job! What about adding a separate filter to distinguish between interesting VFR and IFR flight plans?

The idea of the site is that the community can post flight plans to it. I can’t make thousands of flight plans myself! Could you post some of these on the site?

Really good idea!

I like the community-driven idea behind that.
Would be great if you could introduce a rating system further down the road.

Keep up - your project is on the spot, very well done!
