[In Development] RAF Kenley 1940

For our next release Time Machine Designs & Boomsatsuma are excited to announce “RAF Kenley 1940”.

We are building this iconic Battle of Britain airfield as it appeared on 17th August 1940, the day before the devastating low level air raid on the “Hardest Day”.

We are building Kenley using

  • an original hand drawn plan from December 1939 from a Kenley squadron Operations Record Book
  • the Air Ministry plan of 1946 with the drawing references for specific buildings
  • original drawings for specific buildings from the RAF Museum
  • archive photos and descriptions
  • sequences from Reach for the Sky (1955) and Angels One Five (1952), both of which were filmed at Kenley using many of the original buildings
  • descriptions in “Attack Alarm” by Hammond Innes who was stationed at Kenley during the Battle of Britain and used it as the source for his fictional RAF Thorby

“RAF Kenley 1940” will reflect the layout at that point with every known building from latrines to the Officers Mess, contemporary airfield vehicles, airfield defences, clutter and static aircraft representing the resident Hurricanes of 615 Squadron and Spitfires of 64 Squadron.

And it will ship with 24 parking spaces, allowing for massed takeoffs.

Below are some work in progress shots of different elements.

Beautiful! Such attention to detail, really looking forward to seeing this progress.
Hopefully there’ll be chaps milling around smoking pipes and a vicar cycling past.

I hope not Father Brown. He only turns up when murder is in the air

Thanks! We have plans to populate the airfield although the full set might have to follow as an update as they are part of a bigger project to also populate Hadrian’s Wall 180 and our Iron Age Hillforts.

Thanks; yes, we are making good progress at the moment and looking forward to keeping everyone updated.

@EnjonUK whilst we wait for the chaps to arrive one of our modellers has set out make sure they as comfortable as they can be waiting for the call to scramble…

Excellent stuff, really love these immersive touches.
The chaps certainly needed some distractions and nothing epitomises that more than cricket (except maybe for tea and biscuits).

MR3D developed EGOD, a WW2 themed airfield for Xplane. The animations and objects used are incredible. I would love to see something like this for MSFS and will wait to see what you come up with.

BTW, I love the radio. Looking good so far :+1:

Good point, will add mugs of tea, biscuits and some stumps to the job list!

Thanks for the heads up, I have never used Xplane but EGOD looked like a huge piece of work.

I guess the difference is we are aiming for as accurate a representation of Kenley as we can, but the kinds of objects and animations are definitely on our plans as well.

@LegibleSphere83 @Sulenor

Thanks we are hoping the interest is there too!

We have a number in mind but if you have specifics you would to see do let us know.

I personally would love to see a ww2 era Duxford

So, Duxford is definitely on the list.

One of the advantages we have is in RAF’s standardisation of building types which means that the library we are building for Kenley can also give us a baseline for other RAF stations.

I am looking forward to it. I love to add some WWII era stuff to go with some of my favorite classic planes and your work looks very promising. I do not know your things yet, but am now motivated to go take a look.

Thanks, I hope you like the look of our Hadrian’s Wall and our hillforts project.

Manston, Thorney Island in UK.

Maupertus in France.

As we’ll have B17 sooner, i wish some airfields for them.

Please, sell it on store which can allow to use addon managers (i used modman FX) which allow to have filter, and can install and uninstall easily.

@Sulenor great suggestions, thanks.

Our current planning is around aircraft that are available and then looking ahead to future releases. I also want to ensure that we cover a variety of places and periods.

And yes, it will go onto the Store as well as being a direct purchase.
