I dont know about all of you guys but i interact with several large player groups, all of which agree that its a little bit too windy EVERYWHERE. How can it be with a 2mph breeze it can blow a 52000lb aircraft across the ground? We have to either negate this with Auto Rudder assist or kick full rudder all the way through taxiing to take off, then as soon as your off the ground the cross wind is gone? Has the planetary rotation of the Earth been over compensated for or is something seriously amiss with the atmospheric effect?
Please if anyone else is getting fed up with this please please help me get this at least looked at or acknowledged.
I think it has to do with the flight dynamics of some aircraft. They just are not modeled properly. It could also be within Asobo weather engine but many have adapted to it. I personally think it has to do with the aircraft. A great example is from Fenix, they recently had a update blog where they focused a lot on the physics regarding crosswind. Here is a the examples they have.

Leads me to believe this might be a reason why but it could be a majority of factors. Fenix have done a excellent job showcasing this. I am not a huge nerd when it comes to the physics side of things, it can be there is automatic system compensating something or such,

How much it effects an aircraft depends on how the aircraft has been coded. Which is explained in nerdy detail here. TL:DR - not all aircraft are badly effected as others.
Those new cross-wind values are implemented after release 2020 and -1000 means the cross-wind has 100% affect on the aircraft on the ground. At release of this sim we had 0 crosswind when standing still on the ground and then it gradually increased when the aircraft increased in groundspeed.
Some aircraft has the default values and some uses this more realistic setting of -1000. Thats why some aircraft feels different and maybe the air feels strange at ground because the tire friction has not been set propperly to be realistic and maybe make the aircraft feels like on ice and that the rudder doesn’t react by inputs.

Cessna 172 is a default plane with those new values and it’s more of an experimental aircraft at the moment. I know they improved it some in a recent update but they should have included the default version as an optional alternative to choose until it’s propperly tuned in my opinion.
Hi yes, the new min/max crosswind values work a little different from how you have described it.
The best thing to do is look at the list and see what numbers are showing against any given aircraft. Some use the min/max crosswind values to scale the effects of the wind. Others use lateral tire friction values to make the tires more sticky when pushed from the side. Others use a combination.
The main thing is, if you don’t want to get bogged down in the details is to see if the Dev has done anything. If there are no numbers showing against an aircraft then it’s likely going to suffer very badly from the wind pushing it around on the ground.

Seb talked about this in a q&a before they released this new feature/improvment of ground physics and crosswind behaviour at ground.
It were a first stage and more will come he said back then.
The list is based on the raw code taken from the flight_model.cfd, which is the only truly reliable source.
When the question came up at the last Dev Q&A they said (and I paraphrase): ‘we are working on a fix and we introduced the new values’.
The new ground physics model will be interesting to see when it arrives, but the problem is that as of SU12, some 93% of the stock Aircraft that come the SIM have not had any of these values applied.
Which is why we need the list to see what Devs had taken action and who has not. And for me that translates into purchasing choices.

About the ground physics and tire model:
They have a racing sim called forza motorsport why not get help from those devs to create the tire model especially
I know this is a flight sim but cars using ground physics and aerodynamics as well. And i know they are kind of good at simulating cars behaviour on ground. I’m talking about the motorsport series not the horizon series.
Maybe they already got help from those.

Yeah check the list out. It is comprehensive on Asobo/Microsoft aircraft thanks to the work of @hobanagerik A few of the stock planes have had them applied other than the C172 G1000. But only a few. I just wondered after the last Dev Q&A if Seb was really sighted on how low the take-up rate had been on their own models?
Some 3rd parties are on it - the JF Arrows have had a full make over. SWS and others too.
The list isn’t complete of course - we rely on folk who own the payware models to report the values by looking at the flight model and sadly not many have.
I’m not sure why there is few stock updated. I bet it requires much research and testing to get it right and the most simple is to have the default values?
I have the latest JF updates but i’m not at home right now. Can check it and update tomorrow.
It’s easy to apply the code. And if you are only changing the four new ground values the testing regime is pretty simple (explained in the other thread) compared to testing flight dynamics. I know this from direct experience of working with official developers.
So no idea why they went to the trouble of implementing the new values and then didn’t actually make use of them.![]()
I added the new values on some of the default by my self. As you say it’s easy to do. But the friction values i think needs to be tuned specifically for every single aircraft to get it feel as realistic as possible. I’m not 100% sure.
So you know how easy it is to do. We of course lack all the sensory feedback that would help gauge just the right value by feel. But if you set a common benchmark then it’s not so hard to hit the right value.
But yes - it does depend very much on the given aircraft. The CJ4 was probably the worst to suffer from weather vaning and even the new very high lateral friction values (10) that have been applied still dont seem quite enough.
Some aircraft are more complicated (tail-draggers) and the degree of prop-wash and rudder authority also have to be taken into consideration.
It’s probably that the team that do physics is not the same as the team that did the aircraft models which may have even been outsourced, so there is no particular pressure on the aircraft Devs to make the change.
Yes i were really interested why the cessna felt so strange after they changed it in an earlier build and checked the sdk and found those new rows of codes added under flight tuning in flight_model.cfg and changed those lines back to those mentioned default values because i couldn’t use the plane with those new added values. They never tuned the friction of the tires. Thats why i mentioned it is more of an experimental version of the aircraft at the moment in my opinion. In recent build they have improved the plane though.
Not only that but they were monkeying around with a nose-wheel steering value too, which is another way of countering the weathervane effect.

I think it would help many users to understand those newly released features if they actually released a video describing it together with the release notes in sim updates. Because many would say it’s wrong with the air behaviour when it’s actually is the aircraft flightmodel. And not all of the users check their q&as but most of the users check release notes.

Actually I was thinking of doing a video explaining the issue as folk really don’t seem to have an appreciation of the problem. They just blame their controls, or piloting skill, or some mysterious ‘flight model’. Even some Devs don’t really understand the values and how they work!
