Microsoft is discontinuing Windows Mixed Reality WMR

,

Are you unable to just use USB cables? Meta wants me to buy $70 cables but my cheap USB C cables work just fine.

@TheBlackWind977 Mate, this is way off topic (this is a WMR thread).

For Meta Quest headsets any decent usb3 link cable should work ok. The ability to maintain your headset battery charge levels and performance may depend more on your usb3 ports. Just run the meta-link pc app device usb speed test and make sure you’re getting at least 2.2Gbps. If you need additional info on Link I suggest you look at my thread here;

Not really; it was a reply in regard to someone going thru crazy numbers of cables with an HP set. Did you bother to read the post above it that I was replying to? O.o

I don’t know for sure if the HP uses USB cables, but if it does, it seems plausible you wouldn’t have to keep buying what is obviously poor quality (and expensive?) cables from the manufacturer.

Sorry mate, you referenced Meta and I guess that through me off, lol!

HP-Reverb cable is a special one with power supply and a special headset connector.

Sorry if this has been mentioned already but since 24H2 is just around the corner, is there anything I need to do to keep it from installing? I’m on Win 11 Home so the registry-hacks I’ve read about apparently won’t work.

Can I assume that I’m safe as long as I don’t actively click on that particular update?

Hoping to get another year out of my G1 before 24H2 is mandatory for security-updates.

You might want to do a last update then turn off updates. That can buy some time but you’re increasingly unprotected as time goes without updates plus they only let you do that for so long.

I haven’t seen it but maybe others know - even though Microsoft is deprecating WMR support, is it actually being removed? I don’t care if they deprecate it as long as they don’t remove it.

If this is the complete end to WMR we’re mighty close. If it continues to run even if not updated/fixed we’re good for a while. If they pull it out 24H2, I won’t be flying for a while since the headset I’m considering isn’t available yet.

Found this on the HP website: “On December 2023, Microsoft announced that Windows Mixed Reality is deprecated and will be removed from future versions of the Windows operating system. Microsoft updates and support for Windows Mixed Reality will end starting in November 2026.”

If accurate, we’re good for a while.

Just curious which one you are considering. I plan to go with the Pimax Crystal Light, but haven’t purchased yet, so interested in your choice.

WMR is not usable after installing 24H2, people who are already on it have confirmed that their headsets are bricked.

As far as I know, we should be able to decline installing 24H2 until October 2025 and still get security-patches but after that, it’s mandatory.

Who’s already on it? Do they stagger the roll out?

Depends on your settings, you could get it ahead of everyone automatically. In any case, my Reverb has been toast for awhile.

You mean as a result of updating to 24H2?

I’m guessing. I could not get WMR in the Store after a rebuild, and the controllers no longer bind to the headset (that stopped working quite awhile ago).
I’m back on Windows 10 now, so I can see it in the Store. Perhaps the strategy is to stay on Windows 10 as long as possible.
Anyway, I’ve moved on to a new headset.

Mine still works (on Windows 11 no less) but that update has not yet come my way.

Sorry to hear about yours. Guess I’ll be in that camp soon enough :cry:

Very sad all this, I’m perfectly happy with my G1/10700/3080 system but my fps-margin is very thin. Reading up in other threads has me concluding that Q3/PSVR2 both mean that I will loose performance due to encoding and potential need for upscaling.

Hence the keen interest in not installing 24H2 by mistake, I need the extra year to see what MSFS 2024 brings to the VR-table and also saving up for a new rig :slight_smile:

If you go for Pimax buy it from a place where you can easily return it. I am disappointed with Crystal Light and sending it back.

Thanks, I’ll be watching your other thread with interest. As others (there) have said, I’m keeping my powder dry for now… but can’t wait too long as 24H2 looms :rage:

As a very satisfied Quest3 owner (sharpness, full FOV clarity due to wonderful pancake lenses), I still believe that the lack of a Display Port but the clever use of wifi6e is quite acceptable - I don’t miss the cable at all. The somewhat compressed image is just not noticeable to me using Virtual Desktop. I wear glasses but the $50USD inserts make the image so sharp and easy to use. Also, the standalone VR passthrough (ability to see your desk as needed) capability is terrific.
I had the HP Reverb for several years but find the Q3 superior. Sorry that Microsoft has stopped the Reverb support though.

Happy to hear that you found a replacemet that works well. May I ask what your system-specs are?

By changing the appropriate group policy in Win 11, the OS can be frozen at 23H2. (Frozen indefinitely, though at a certain point beyond the freezing, security updates will cease.) The group editor, though configured in Win 11 pro, is not installed in the Home version, BUT it is included in the package. All you have to do is install it. Instructions for doing so, along with instructions for freezing at 23H2, are plentiful on the web.

For example;

This procedure was published for 21H2; just substitute 23H2.
