MSFS SU16 - aggregation of complaints about poor LOD, bad colour, low resolution blurry terrain textures

There is a lot of concern among the community around the quality of the aerial imagery in MSFS SU16 which is oversaturated and low resolution compared to the level of detail we currently have in MSFS SU15.

The problem seems to be that since SU16, MSFS2020 is no longer loading the ZL20 imagery under any circumstances, which is causing the blurriness. It’s like the world is stuck on ZL18 as the maximum, when there should be 4 times more imagery resolution.

There is a confirmed bug which is logged below for MSFS 2024 and has 700+ votes:

And additional threads of other users voicing their worry or reporting blurry / low resolution ground imagery specifically for the Sim Updates 16 beta:

Because this issue exists now in SU16 for 2020 in addition to 2024 due to the world data alignment, can a community member comment on whether the team are considering a delay to SU16 release to resolve this issue before rollout?

This regression will certainly have an obvious impact on the quality of the simulator.

Sim Updates for 2020 occur at a low frequency due to the focus on 2024 so it’s likely we won’t see a SU17 coming any time soon for a fix.

The detailed implications of change listed below, detailed by @CaphollandX

1 - FS2020 SU16 will share the same base-scenery problems that currently exist in the FS2024 world
2 - FS2020 SU16 will benefit from the same base-scenery fixes and upgrades when these are made in the FS2024 world
3 - The base scenery that has existed in FS2020 up until now, including in SU15, will no longer be available to fly in once SU16 goes live (depending on whether my wishlist item gets noticed or not).
4 - While some areas of the SU16/FS2024 world have improved, there are other areas where the SU15 world still looks better, sharper, and more realistically coloured than in SU16.
5 - The roads in FS2020 SU15 appear to be vector-generated paths over the top of the base scenery. These appear as sharply delineated paths across the landscape, with moving traffic present. These vector roads do have issues sinking below the terrain in some areas.
6 - The roads in FS2020 SU16 are directly represented by the graphics captured from the Bing aerials. This means they will never visually sink below the terrain. But it also means they are no longer as sharp at low altitudes. And because they appear exactly as you see them in Bing maps, they include static “flattened” vehicles that sit under the moving road traffic generated by FS2020.
7 - The base scenery colours for FS2024 are moderated to a degree by the implementation of “seasons”. Those dynamic colour adjustments do not appear in FS2020 SU16, so the unmodified aerials can have an over-saturated and even “cartoony” look in some areas.
8 - Some of these items are more noticable if your flying style is primarily low-and-slow. Others stand out more at high altiludes.
9 - Whether or not any of these changes in SU16 will be perceived as a “regression” relative to SU15 will vary from individual to individual based on their preferred areas for and styles of flying. Some will and do feel very strongly that SU16 scenery represents a “regression”, others may be neutral on the subject, and yet others may find the new scenery an improvement and upgrade to their FS2020 flying experience.
10 - Once SU16 goes live as-is (without an option to retain the SU15 world) and you only then discover that your preferred area to fly in now looks worse than it did before, there is no going back.

  • an additional impact of these new maps, DEM and OSM data is on existing add-on sceneries built for the existing maps. It might cause scenery elevation problems/buildings in areas they weren’t previously and harsh colour mismatches.

If MS/A keeps dealing out regressions to accommodate Xbox I can see a slow rolling exodus to X-Plane. I hope that doesn’t happen but shame on them for not recognizing there is massive power beyond Xbox currently and to tune for the lowest common denominator will cost this franchise I’m starting to fear, and I’ve been a staunch advocate for MSFS 20 and 24. Why they can’t simply use sliders to impact detail to go from Xbox to highest end PC is hard to fathom. I mean we’re now five years out from the technology 2020 was built for and CPU and GPU have advanced appreciably.

They would have solved a lot of things if they allowed us a minimum of control over the graphics part by giving us more options to set whether you prefer to accommodate performance to graphics or vice versa, on series x never had problems with stutter etc. so that the weaker consoles like series s can find a good compromise while with series x you can use its full power.

And this is a request that has already been made several times for several years but always ignored. Games like this are essential to have even a minimum of settings on the graphics part.
Please Asobo wake up!

Hello @ZahiDhuubow,

This is exactly how MSFS (2020) and MSFS 2024 already work currently. There are multiple builds for different devices (PC, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S). The PC build gives players full control over their graphical settings and options. The two Xbox builds have locked-in settings that are pre-set and optimized for the specific capabilities of each console. The notion that the PC build has been “dumbed down” or in any way diminished because the sim is also available on Xbox has never been true. The minimum PC hardware requirements are for a lower-spec machine than an Xbox Series S console.

Thanks,
MSFS Team

@dgvrnsky, thank you for posting this thorough collection of the issues we FS2020 users are suddenly having to grapple with as a consequence of the switch to the new aerials introduced in SU16.

I was really excited when the SU16 beta was announced, mostly because this signalled that bug fixes for FS2020 were back on the menu. I was also looking forward to seeing the new aerials, except as we’ve discovered, the reality of that change is not quite the complete upgrade we expected.

My hope is that MS/Asobo will decide to roll back the switch to the new aerials, and schedule this in for a future update. SU16 could then still be released (a bit behind schedule) with its performance and shutdown fixes, but keeping the current FS2020 world.

And then when the new aerials are eventually re-introduced for FS2020, that it will be as a selectable option along with the original aerials.

As somebody who’s never had an xbox, this is interesting information. I often had the same thought that @ZahiDhuubow expressed. I’m glad to hear it’s based on a misconception. I haven’t heard this technical distinction between Xbox vs PC settings being made before. This would be a useful fact to remind people about in dev streams.

@dgvrnsky, in the spirit of aggregation, I’m going to reproduce one of my comments from another thread here, specifically around SU16 moving to the new aerials and what it means for those of us who are still only using FS2020 as our primary sim of choice.

1 - FS2020 SU16 will share the same base-scenery problems that currently exist in the FS2024 world

Update: Full list removed by myself since OP has now added my points to the top post, and there is no need to read it here again. The full post can also be found in its original thread. Thank you, @dgvrnsky.

Really well documented. I’ll add these to the first post.

Fair enough and thank you for that, but then where is the reduced LOD coming from you read people complaining about? Also, and this is significant: I notice in 2024 my VRAM use went DOWN significantly in the recent month or more, and system RAM use went UP about the same amount, and I have a 4090 w/ 24Gb of VRAM. I also notice less smoothness than previously so it would appear they tuned the PC build to accommodate lower VRAM amounts, and yet hardware marches on now w/ 32Gb in the latest NV builds.

Feels like this should be a top priority.. Why have such a nice digital world riddled with awful LOD pop ins. Honestly I’m ok with the textures loosing some sharpness from less of a distance. but seeing trees pop in and out a mile or so around the aircraft instead of fading in and out in the distance is an extremely eye catching and immersion killing bug. I’ve been using 2020 since it came out and this is 100% something that started happening this year. I agree that the updated world imagery is needed. But 2020 is in the ultra fine tuning/maintence stage of its life and big regressions like this are simply unacceptable.

I dont know. As far as the vegetation LOD issue It started for me after city update 10 in cities affected by city update 10 regardless if the update was installed or not. its clearly a server issue because it was briefly resolved when I updated to sim update 16 and sometimes it will affect the entire world for a day.

Its not the first time we have seen a big corporation make a perfectly good product inferior in favour of a newer version. I suspect the bean counters at MS HQ are pulling the Asobo strings. Lets hope Asobo can change the minds of said bean counters as I for one will be sorely disappointed if this downgrade actually rolls out!

If it AIN’T broke, Asobo, WHY break it?!?

The issue is the visual downgrade that is forced on us, which is out of the players control.

If we had an “Aerial texture quality” setting, enabling us to choose the resolution we want to stream, instead of simply lowering it for everyone, we wouldn’t have this discussion.

I think this is just the classic arguments about the trade off space in simulation
High res textures and graphics vs performance (frame rate)

It’s hard to please everyone as we have such a range of equipment specs… but as a 2000 hr apprentice flyer I know what I’d prefer- it probably is no surprise that currently I do more of my serious flying in MSFS2020 - at least, for now.

Yup, the new textures came as a shock for 2020 and it has to be said that I wasn’t necessarily enamoured after bad experiences in MSFS2024.

However with quite a few flight under my belt I think SU16 beta performance is better than SU15 and as a result the build feels more stable too. Yes, there are one or two areas with texture problems - and we will always have that in any build - SU 15 has never been perfect either, that’s a misconception.

But I’ve started to appreciate the SU16 beta graphics a bit more - they fee more realistic and immersive than SU15 somehow - I’ve noticed that I’m flying more again now, where my hours had dropped off given the very stark differences between 2020 SU15 and 2024…

And we are all going to have to jump ship to 2024 in the end - for better or for worse, that’s the trajectory MS/Asobo have chosen for us all. I think MSFS2020 SU16 is now good to go - but we should carry on with these trade off discussions for MSFS2024 - that is where the right balance for everyone must be (and needs to be) struck.

The issue unfortunately is much bigger than what you describe here. It affects the entire world.

Nobody is forcing 2020 users to upgrade to 2024 and I highly doubt they’d completely unlist 2020 from Steam/MS Stores. The only paid games that have had licenses completely revoked and removed is Ubisoft’s The Crew and Order of War. The industry does not take to that behaviour lightly and recieve a lot of public critism when it’s something users have paid licenses for no matter how many sequels there are. It’s possible that server side components might get degraded in a way we are seeing here but 2020 will always remain available for play.

I’ve also noticed the lower you are to the ground the lower the draw distance the higher you go up the greater the draw distance why not make it big all the time, when I’m coming in for landing and there is a a city a few miles out from me i literally watch the buildings disappear one by one as I get closer to the airport, like really ?

Who said anything about “forcing”? It’s clear that the direction of travel is towards 2024, like it or not - there is already less support for 2020 than we are used to and that trend will only carry on…
