How were we affected exactly? The culling was the only real issue we had, and it has been resolved since then. Everything else people claim have no legs to stand on. By far the biggest effect of SU5 has been the huge improvement in performance.
It made using TAC and sectionals somewhat difficult and as a TrackIR user the popins drove me bananas. On VATSIM a controller would tell me to report over a VRP and I started having issues finding said VRP. Thankfully I have TrueEarth by Orbx for P3D and XP to fall back on. Sure, it made performance better however we lost a lot of visuals. Quite a few with very high-end rigs (including myself) were not happy about it. Many had bought rigs with MSFS in mind.
I have upgraded my rig with thousands with MSFS in mind. I have gone through 3 graphics cards, and two VR headsets, upgraded my processor, mainboard and from SSD to NVME, 8gigs to 32gigs RAM. I would have bought a 3k series card had they been readily available. I still donât get the whining of the âhigh-endâ crowd because of the visuals, not a single one has been able to provide proof of the degradation to the level they claim has happened.
Iâm pretty sure I posted a number of videos back then. It was quite obvious that the VFR experience was definitely compromised. Weather or not you took notice to this is another story. For the most part weâre past this. Iâm running MSFS on full blast and my experience is now rather peachy. If I hop in P3D or XP now itâs because of my addons. Back then Iâm pretty sure I shelfed MSFS for a bit not because of the lack of addons but because of the rather poor state it was in for flying under VFR. Only reason I would fire it is to illustrate the state it was in on these forums.
Again, nothing against MSFS being on Xbox nor the players that choose to use it. I just wasnât very fond of what it did to us PC players.
If that is so, why are there so many people still complaining about SU5 and Xbox release? That is my point, the culling was the only real issue that was introduced, and it was fixed JUST for PC users thereafter. But still there are people who go on and on about âdumbing down graphics because of XBoxâ.
Peeps are complaining about the downgrade to graphics to the magnitude they were back then? I dunno about that. I mean it wasnât just the culling, the lighting was messed up. I remember taking a screenshot around NYC with settings fully maxed out at 1440p and it looked terrible. That screenshot is on these forums.
Yes, the night lighting was a clear bug when you had anything else than 100 as render scaling. It had nothing to do with Xbox or purposeful degradation of graphics to âfit the sim to Xboxâ. Hence the hotfix to fix it. Look, my point is this: blaming SU5 for the perceived graphical degradation because of Xbox - and that is the reason why some people active here in the forum are still angry with Xbox and Xbox users - is not based on facts, and therefore I cannot understand it.
That isnât even what I am talking about. The bug I mentioned was before the bug you mentioned cropped up. I found out the bug youâre talking about when I was departing Banning in California at night (and yes it really messed me up, lol). The issue I am talking about happened in NYC and in broad daylight. The screenshot of it is posted on these forums. Maybe âlightingâ isnât the right word for it but itâs the best way I can think of how to describe it.
Does it still happen? Can I go and replicate it so I know what you are talking about?
I donât know, currently in cruise flying the 152 during a huge VATSIM event and I donât want to just quit the flight. I will check once I land.
Really? Have you actually checked the release notes and after what you actually have in-game?
I am seriously tired of you people lying based on your own âfeelingâ how things are.
Most people who play on a flat screen may not notice what Asobo has done to make the sim playable on XBOX. But, you will see how severe the sim had to sacrifice graphics in VR. Or compare the recording of an earlier flight to the current iterations. They had to reduce aliasing quality as well as plixel density to reduce the memory foot print and draw distance to make room. The result is unacceptable shimmer and blurry mess in bright light or contrasty nigh lighting. The complaints you hear is not against Xbox release but the way they chose to do it by merging the coding into one instead of branching out.
If you donât notice the degradation, consider yourself blessed. But, donât assume that people are complaining without evidence just because you donât see it.
Iâm keeping my fingers crossed that Asobo will eventually make the sim all it can be. But, the SU5, and what they called âoptimizationâ has been a huge step backwards.
Yes i noticed that.. it takes the system a little bit of time to do AA. When moving around its visible at streift surfaces. Like thereâs a delay in AA, as if the priority for AA changed and also the density drastically changed.
But thatâs not too bad
I should know better as I doubt there will be any convincing anyone on this forum, but anywayâŠ![]()
I was part of the SU5 beta, and immediately before that started, I recorded a video of a âstandardâ flight. This was version 1.17.3, so was after SU4 and WU5. To make it repeatable, I use the AI copilot to fly it, so untouched by human hands you might say. It is a flight from London City (EGLC) to Heathrow (EGLL) straight over the top of photogrammetry London. I do it at noon and with clear skies to avoid as much variability as possible.
Ever since then, Iâve repeated and recorded the flight with every sim and world update since.
I have (what Iâd like to think!) a pretty high end rig:
i9 10900K
64Gb RAM
RTX 3080
All settings I use are maxed out (other than motion blur, which I turn off). Render scaling is at 100 and I run the sim at 2560x1440.
So below is the comprison of the current versionm (1.20.6.0 post SU6) with that initial video I did back in July (version 1.17.3 post SU4 and WU5). I only do the first couple of minutes of the flight because the AI copilot behaviour has changed (annoyingly) so the end of the flight goes quite differently - but thatâs a whole other area for discussion!
So for those of you lamenting the days of SU4 and pre SU5 - have a look. Would you really want to go back to that? I know I wouldnât. It is easy to forget how far we have come, and as the recent posts above suggest, the material issues that did arise after SU5 have been fixed and we are moving forward again from a very strong base. Of course there is still much that can be improved.
Yourtube is processing the HD version right now, should be available shortly:
sad that you only recorded with a static outdoor camera.
The viewing angle that is 99.9% certain not used in VR. And there certain points were definitely noticeable.
But a good starting point for pancake users.
(btw, i have seen all your compare vids)
For my part, apart from LOD and the bad lighting, I was able to restore the preSU05 quality at some point by changing render settings. However, with the complete loss, the loudly suggested increase in performance. ![]()

Focus on the topic, not on each other.
Slow Mode set.
What is âscenery gateway system (community content)â all about? Iâve often seen that in these development updates but Iâve no idea what its actually referring to.
If it ends up being like the one for X-Plane, the community can submit custom made airports to a repository. These can then be incorporated into the sim. IIRC for X-Plane that would be after they have been checked, and they can then be included in the next sim update.
Iâm not sure if itâs ever been outlined what it is to be expected of the MSFS version, how it would work, or any of the details other than we want it, and it would be a good thing.
Some are suspiciously allowed to say whatever they want to whomever as long as they praise what has been done to this sim. They also seem to have the power to hide posts without having it be reviewed first. Quickest way to put a stop is to mute and never respond.
