PMDG 737 Discussion (PC Version) (Part 2)

OK I might have missed that but what did Fenix implement that’s more a ground crew role?

I’m thinking primarily of the management of the fuel panel and cargo door operations - but also things like removing wheel chocks, as far as I know, would not fall under the responsibility of the pilots, but is doable with Fenix.

Ahh OK I see what you’re saying now

I know this is going to come as a shock to some people, but PMDG is not Fenix. They do things their way, which is to focus on what flight crews do to fly the plane. Walkaround stuff is what rampers do, or what you do on a GA plane. Tapping a click spot with a mouse isn’t the same thing as bending down, grabbing the handle on the rope and dragging the chocks aside either, but apparently is quite the magical experience for some people? You’re not gonna get that from a PDMG product and expecting otherwise is not going to change that.

The bottom line as always is, people can either buy the product, or not. If the value proposition is there for you buy it. If it’s not, don’t. It’s really quite simple and people acting bent out of shape or worse, actually upset, is silly.

I think it’s fair to compare to similarly priced products in a very niche hobby. I see more PMDG users bent out of shape by criticism than I do those doing the criticizing, but maybe that’s because I avoid their discord like the plague

Also (and I recognize I’m being a bit hyperbolic here but) why spend all the time, effort, and resources on modeling the exterior of the airframe at all then? Or all the work they’ve put into custom ground services you can barely see, if at all, from the flight deck?

Clicking your $20 mouse on the screen where there’s a knob of the MCP is also not the same thing as operating an MCP, but surely you’re not saying that that is a worthless experience, right?

Like I said, I’ll no doubt buy the upgrade and enjoy the aircraft, but it’s absolutely fair to compare apples to apples here and showcase that other developers have offered more for less.

Pilots absolutely walk around an airliner before a flight just as you’d do with a 172. They’re not removing chocks or covers (majority of the time) but there is a preflight walk around for airlines it’s just usually a visual only inspection

And you can certainly do that in any 2024 plane. So what’s the argument here? People were complaining about chock click spits and engine covers.

I maybe misunderstood based on the previous sentence

that includes the walk around element. To me it read as “pilots don’t do the walk around, ground crews do”

Not at all. Stuff like the chocks and covers, is what I meant. Honestly, those things are fun to faff around with on a GA flight but really pretty silly to get focused for an airliner, which is rarely parked for more than 10-12 hours a day in any real operator, if that long. The flight crew isn’t pulling chocks and engine/pitot covers. If an FO goes out to do the walkaround on their first leg on the jet and finds a pitot or static port cover, there are bigger things to worry about in that airline than just the cover!

I won’t miss any of these myself. Cheers!

Link destination has been removed. Are you sure PMDG is okay with you sharing all this information?

Link still works fine for me, and it’s part of their already-published 737NG manual, so nothing proprietary or confidential, unless PMDG has “leaked” it themselves.

Also I just noticed this on their official product description for the 2020 version: “Updates may be free or offered at a modest surcharge, depending upon policies eventually set for MSFS2024 Marketplace guidelines, to be determined at a date following release of MSFS2024’s in-game Marketplace.”

I’m assuming this is just outdated information as I recall they have since said it will be a paid upgrade regardless of Marketplace policies - unless something changed I was unaware of?

Edit: PMDG Discord has verified this is not an update to their plans but just outdated marketing that has been on the 2020 version’s product page for a year. Hope that didn’t mislead anyone’s purchase of the 2020 version.

Strange, you visited it when it was up so it’s probably still in your cache, that’s why it works for you. But could be something else.

OK one less thing to wait for to make the switch… now for SU4, and it will be time to kick 2020 to the curb… of course then I can be annoyed about the airports that haven’t been optimized :stuck_out_tongue:

I feel like an easy fix is when the cockpit door is closed all pax models are unloaded. You can get the experience of them pre-flight but no FPS hit during flight.
