Poor performance on the ground

@dave1793 Have you tried the 3D photogrammetry cities deletion workaround as described in this thread?

Well, no because i don’t want to delete them. i know it would be a workaround, but i don’t want to work around this, i want this to be fixed by the devs.

You only delete the ones you won’t be using at the time but I understand your frustration.

i know, and thanks for trying to help. But it’s asobos turn to fix this. i surely won’t uninstall and install scenery all the time depending on where i fly. that should not be necessary.

I did some testing with the new version of the sim and the new world update. As usual my test is with the Cessna 172 Skyhawk at JFK on the ground with few clouds at 4K resolution, everything on ultra, Photogrammetry on and Terrain LOD 300 on a intel 8600k OC 4.8Ghz, 48Gb Ram, RTX 3080 10Gb and rolling cache in a ram disk .

With all the 3D photogrammetry cities installed: 17 FPS
With only Italy installed 39 FPS
With all 3D photogrammetry cities deleted 44 FPS.

I’ve noticed that in my system panning with track IR on the ground is smoother than it used to be after the first panning is done and all objects are loaded. FPS drops to 37 but with less stuttering. I’m glad the performance is fine after the workaround, just hope that it won’t be needed in the near future.

I wanted to add that those numbers are while waiting on the runway. When doing the take off roll the FPS goes down to around 36 and panning towards the airport does produce more stuttering than when sitting on the ground.

Also in the new version of the Sim flying low on central park is not a stutterfest anymore. It is pretty smooth now.

Try turning the Photogrammetry off. That got rid of the stutters for me.

Question: it is not the same to delete all 3D photogrammetry cities than turn off photogrammetry in the general options? After all if you delete the 3D photogrammetry files you cant you cant enjoy the region you previous deleted…

@VivaceDegree988. The workaround is not the same as disabling photogrammetry. The idea is to delete the 3D photogrammetry cities of the area you won’t be flying at to improve performance.

For example if you are going to flying in the USA, delete all 3D photogrammetry cities from the world updates and you can enjoy the photogrammetry there with better performance.

Later if you decide you want to fly in France. Install the corresponding 3D photogrammetry cities and fly there. After you are done, delete it and restart the sim.

It is annoying having to do it this way but for many of us this gives us great performance until the issue is fixed.

If you delete the photogrammetry cities from the area that you are planning to fly at… That is indeed the same as disabling photogrammetry but that is not what the work around is about since the idea is to improve performance on the ground while being able to enjoy photogrammetry on.

If you don’t really care about PG, then turning it off is a legitimate workaround.

Do you have the same issue if you follow the OP’s steps to reproduce it?

Yes

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:

Upon starting my sim I have more or less acceptable 37FPS at my departure airport on the ground. (I had around 45 before SU9) However when I approach my destination the FPS starts degrading more and more the closer I get to the airport. In the end I am stuck at roughly 20FPS.

If relevant, provide additional screenshots/video:

Before

After landing

I am worried as it seems like it has been narrowed down to PG being the cause. However in my case, I have every PG city uninstalled and I am flying with PG disabled all the time.

This is not issue caused by low altitude. This is widely spread performance degradation over time. Check this topic for more details: Massive FPS drop because of SU9

That issue is there for months, thousands of people are affected by it, but Asobo doesn’t care at all…

may be: choose a helicopter and PG enabled. Then a location e.g. near an airport terminal where you get low fps. Then climb straight up. What you notice ? Then disable PG and repeat the test.

This is something Asobo says they can’t seem to reproduce yet it happens every flight for me or almost every flight. Every now and then it will let me land and in some cases even shut down without killing the FPS but 99.9% of the time I lose half my FPS just landing. In the rare case I don’t lose FPS landing I am afraid to turn the main bat off because it will log the flight and kill the FPS.

So there is actually a few bugs going on here yet nobody can reproduce it yet it happens to us almost every flight?

well, the low ground fps are solved for me by deleting the PG Packages of the WU’s. Actually what is already flagged as solution in the initial post.

So reproducing should be very easy, just install all WU’s and spawn on KLAX :stuck_out_tongue: … Its really a pitty that for more then half a year this issue persists (and gets worse with every WU) and no real solution yet. I mean, i am not a specialist, but how diffucult can it be to avoid loading PG (or commands to load PG) that are far away from your own aircraft? Its ridiculous to have performance penaly in the US when i have Europe’s PG’s enabled …

Yeah.. I really hope that the dev team (Asobo) would read this thread. So far, it seems nobody from the dev team read this. :frowning:

It sure seems that way doesn’t it. And in the developer Q&A session it was asked ā€œare you investigating the poor performance on the ground issueā€ and they basically answered ā€œyes of course, next question pleaseā€ā€¦lol

What worked for me was to delete the file overrides.json and the folder mapscache. MSFS recreates them at the next time it loads. This doesnt work for everyone but it did work for me.

A workaround with 3D cities:
I don’t install/unistall in the content manager in MSFS (this workaround need a restart of MSFS for the perf issue ) but i move theses folders in my add-on folder.
Then, before starting MSFS, i select the one i need with add-on-linker.
