[Possible Solution] Low Bandwidth Messages

Hello folks,

I have received word from our Zendesk support team that they were able to successfully resolve the “low bandwidth” issue for several players. In many cases reported by Zendesk so far, the impacted players were using an unauthorized map data mod (originally released for MSFS 2020), and completely removing all references to this mod from their system resolved the problem they were experiencing with low bandwidth messages.

If you are experiencing low bandwidth issues and have previously used a non-authorized map mod, you can fully restore the default map data and undo any modification made to your hosts file by the mod by following these instructions.

  1. Use the Windows search bar and search for Notepad. Right-click and select Run as Administrator.
  2. In Notepad, go to File > Open and then navigate to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc and open the hosts file.
  3. Delete these entries:
  1. Save and exit Notepad
  2. Reboot your PC

Warning: we do NOT recommend using any streamed map data mod that replaces the default maps.

When using mods, consider these factors:

  • You mod at your own risk — the stability and security of your Windows 10/11 device and your Microsoft Flight Simulator installation might be affected
  • Mods are not owned, operated, or tested by the Microsoft Flight Simulator Team. The Microsoft Flight Simulator Team is not responsible for mods or actions taken by mods installed on your device.
  • Future Microsoft Flight Simulator updates may not be compatible with the installed mods
  • Your Xbox Live and device data may be accessed by the mod’s creator. Your personal data may also be exposed.

Thanks,
MSFS Team

I opened the hosts file and found the following entries:

127.0.0.1 kh.ssl.ak.tiles.virtualearth.net
127.0.0.1 t3.ssl.ak.tiles.virtualearth.net
127.0.0.1 t2.ssl.ak.tiles.virtualearth.net
127.0.0.1 t1.ssl.ak.tiles.virtualearth.net
127.0.0.1 t0.ssl.ak.tiles.virtualearth.net
127.0.0.1 khstorelive.azureedge.net
127.0.0.1 cdn-shared-wca-endpoint.azureedge.net

The only map tool I ran was “MSFS Map Enhancement” for MSFS2020. I’m not even running it for the new sim. It was just to get updated Bing maps for 2020.

Hello @tbltpANDROID,

This mod is unauthorized, uses unlicensed data, and is known to cause issues with the sim. We recommend removing it by following the instructions in the OP of this thread.

Thanks,
MSFS Team

I’m cool with removing the app. I think I’m confused because the app isn’t running. I’ll still remove it, just wondering how it’s affecting the sim when it’s not open is all.

Edit. I think I get it. The app made changes to my host file. That makes sense. So; my host file should only have those two entries from the OP.

No, your hosts file should not have any of those entries. Remove ALL of these from yours:

127.0.0.1 kh.ssl.ak.tiles.virtualearth.net
127.0.0.1 t3.ssl.ak.tiles.virtualearth.net
127.0.0.1 t2.ssl.ak.tiles.virtualearth.net
127.0.0.1 t1.ssl.ak.tiles.virtualearth.net
127.0.0.1 t0.ssl.ak.tiles.virtualearth.net
127.0.0.1 khstorelive.azureedge.net
127.0.0.1 cdn-shared-wca-endpoint.azureedge.net

Thanks,
MSFS Team

Thank you. That fixed it. I misread the original post. I got stuck on the initial loading screen after that around 97% so I had to reset my cloud storage. I’m up and running now. Thanks again.

After a full week of troubleshooting and trying a lot of changes, this was 100% THE fix!

The unauthorized program will negatively impact the sim even if it’s not running.

I had extremely slow loading, blurry ground textures, and very long waits to get to every screen. 20- 30 minutes from the time I clicked “FLY” until the plane appeared on the runway.

I followed the instructions in this post and the sim immediately began to run properly. Resolved all of the symptoms mentioned above.

Personal Comments and Observations

Just remember folks - the reason it’s impacting you is the hosts file is being read in addition to your Domain Name Server assigned to you by your ISP, so it’s effectively overriding the sim, even if you think you have this unauthorized mod down / disabled.

After 2 days of trying everything to get it up and running again (after a re install), it was still like day one - ‘bandwicth too low’, then when it did load i couldn’t start a flight or anything.

following the above steps worked for me. delete all lines containing virtualearth.net and azureedge.net.

Have you tried this: Low Bandwidth issues with Telekom - Germany only! - User Support Hub / Install, Performance & Graphics - Microsoft Flight Simulator Forums? We’re collecting feedback to this configuration, which might help Miscrosoft and Telekom to (finally!) sort things out.

It seems that this was working for most of the people who tried it this way.

Deleted the appropriate lines from host file, simply delayed the appearance of the low bandwidth warning, still showed up. My greater problem is the forever hang on the Customize Identity screen. Never have gotten past that and am extremely frustrated.

Well well well, what a MIRACLE WORKER YOU ARE.

I do have other problems with 2024, but the load times and rubbish scenery problems appear to all have gone .

This has been driving me up the wall ever since I first managed to actually download a full copy (7 days after the launch), and I have just used good ole faithful, if very buggy FS2020… for my fliying fix each day.

THANKYOU, THANKYOU, THANKYOU, THANKYOU, THANKYOU, THANKYOU, THANKYOU, THANKYOU, THANKYOU, THANKYOU, THANKYOU, THANKYOU

I have followed the directory: " C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc " and opened the host file. I cannot see any entries akin to those that were to be deleted. Solves nothing. I merely found this:

"

localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.

127.0.0.1 localhost

::1 localhost

"

I tried to check too, but to no avail.

In my HOST file, I don’t have these two lines:

I only find:

Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.

This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.

This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
space.

Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
lines or following the machine name denoted by a ‘#’ symbol.

For example:

  102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
   38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost

Thank you…after rolling back from SU1 i got these long loading times. You saved my day after some restalls. Should be sticky and this still presist

over the past week I have been having “connection lost - you have been switched to offline mode” constantly despite having a perfect internet connection. I have previously used this map mod but can’t find an entry for it in the hosts file?

HI all. I, like others, am still having the “Low Bandwidth” messages on MSFS 2024 as well. I’m even getting them on MSFS 2020 now, only after the new version came out. I also get the “Connection Lost” message, and soon as I click on it, it says “Successful Connection!”. And yes, I do get the “You’ve been switched to offline mode” message as well.

I have long ago uninstalled Map Enhancement and removed those entries from my host file. I have cleared my cache and even switched networks (we have Fiber Optic and Starlink as a backup). I have tried many, if not all, of the suggestions on this forum. Same messages.

Before MSFS 2024 came out, I upgraded my internet to the 10GB tier. So, I upgraded my router to a ASUS 10GB router, use a CAT 6e cable, and also upgraded my ethernet card PCIe to a 10GB card in my PC. Speedtest consistently reads download speeds of at least 5GB. Yes, it’s all hard wired. I have tried at all times of day and even in the middle of the night. No success. Still the same messages.

My computer setup is an Intel i9-13900K, 4090 graphics w/ 24GB, 128G DDR5. So, I believe I have enough oomph to use the game, but can’t while those messages persist. The textures are goo, Much has already been reported - just hoping to get a response as I understand it’s good to post, and they’re reading everything.

Hopefully someone can help me out. Thanks for your time in reading this. Appreciate everyone efforts to help others. I hope i can get a solution for my dilemma - have to go back to 2020 until this gets resolved. Thanks. JP

Oh, I should add that within the game itself, I’ve tried multiple settings, an am currently using Low to Medium on most all Quality settings. OLOD & TLOD are at 100, and I’ve tried TAA, DLSS Super, etc., to no avail. No Frame Gen as well. FPS is typically below 40 up i the air, and down near the ground it’s gets into the teens and sometimes single digits.

I’ve tried uninstalling, reinstalling many, many times, and was in the SU1 Beta. I am now running the stable release of SU1. Thanks.

Exactly the same for me, FS2024 has been nothing but stressful for me since day 1.
