Set TCAS to “TA Only”.
Yes, I agree.
When someone does that and I am waiting to enter the runway, I wait 1 or 1.5 minutes, then I increase throttles on my 747 and stop just far enough in front of him that he can see me, smell my jet exhaust and feel the jet blast from those 4 huge engines. Then I roar to life at full throttle with the brakes on for the next 30 seconds, then…I release the brakes and bid him farewell.
…
He is left feeling sad and disheartened because he thinks I never saw his tiny little insignificant airplane.
Yeah, I don’t think he cares. If he does, then he shouldn’t.
Seriously though, there are newcomers to the sim, who do not know better. We must be patient with them. They will get the hang of it, just as we did when we first took on this hobby.
I used to get a bit miffed when people would land/takeoff on the wrong end of the active runways. At the end of the day, it does not matter- just turn off collision-let them go right through.
Besides there is no definitive way to know which RWYs MSFS has active- sometimes it defies logic and wind direction, likely due to disagreement between meteoblue (live weather) and FlightAware(live traffic) Servers or even Simbrief. Although Simbrief should be Canon IMO.
MSFS was made to cater to everyone- not just us serious longtime simmers. If you want procedure and order, and absolutely have no tolerance, turn off live players, and fly around with live or AI traffic- or if you have the chops, there is always VATSIM. Too many things happening in the world to worry about the guy in front of you that won’t taxi out of your way or being escorted by F/A18’s in the sim no less. You should be so lucky.
If you feel the world is devoid of life though and you want live players, you can’t have everything your way. That’s like saying I like GTA online, but can’t tolerate other players robbing banks, or reckless driving/racing on the streets of San Andreas, so they should not be there.
Also, it serves no purpose to come into the forums to complain, wag fingers, or berate other players, just because they flew their aircraft in a manner unbefitting to some people. This is a simulated world. Some are here to learn, some are here to have fun. It’s not up to anyone here to deprive them of either, and nor can we.
One more thing regarding ATC- It is FAR from perfect to say the least. It cannot “see” online players in YOUR sim. You could have a live player in front of you just about to move onto the runway while LIVE AI is on approach, and ATC will not call a go-around on the AI. The ATC in YOUR Sim sees YOU, not the other players. ATC will tell YOU to hold, or the AI to go around, but is agnostic to live players on your end of the sim. A lot of people have not noticed this.
That also causes players to blame other players, when in their sim something entirely different is happening. Just some food for thought…
ATC has quite often given me takeoff permission for one direction while Live Traffic is landing in the opposite direction. We can’t even blame multiplayer for that.
We’ve just got lots of systems in the game working against each other.
I don’t mind multiplayer people zooming and larking around. It’s nice to see people enjoying a game genre I’ve been tinkering with since my childhood in the 80s. If I want to be serious I’ll just turn MP off.
I think that’s a combination of both ATC and the multiple weather sources in the sim. AI planes seem to get runway assignments based on the ACTUAL weather / wind in the sim. Players tend to get assignment based on the ATIS, which often doesn’t even remotely match the conditions in the sim.
Just turn multiplayer off for those crying about it. I have never seen a single player in the game because i have it off.
So many features of FSX that I miss here… Multiplayer cockpit, in-game communication, tower/radar functionality so you could sit in the tower at an airport and be the controller.
And, if the livery doesn’t exist, but the plane does, why does FS choose a generic plane instead of the first livery of the existing plane?
Finally, I tend to reorder my liveries (but do keep the same names), does that mess things up (I like to put my favorite liveries up front)? That whole livery functionality needs work so we can have a library that works, and it needs to be well documented.
When it comes down to it… IT is a “Flight Simulator Game”
If I need to practice my IFR skills, I turn off Live Weather, Multiplayer and join VatSim.
Best of Both Worlds at our fingertip, Flight Sim Gaming and Serious Flight Simulation with VatSIM .
Perfect !
It’s true, I was the F-18.
I agree that we can’t do anything about it, but that’s not to say that I think it’s okay to behave in a virtual world any way you like with no regard for what other players might want you to do or not do.
If you go to the movies to have an enjoyable time, would you be okay with a group of kiddies enjoying themselves in a noisy way disconnected from what happens on the screen? Of course not.
MSFS is a flight simulator designed as an an environment where you can pretend to be a real pilot following real-world regulations. Therefore, I think it would be fair to expect that everybody at least try their best to help make that happen and not behave recklessly just because.
But of course I would never actually expect that, so, much to my regret, I never have multi-player active.
Sry,
practise my ifr skills with no live weather and in Vatsim? Sry but it looks to me like some good joke.
While I agree with your sentiments, who are any of us to dictate to others what way we should use the sim? If you’re trying to use real world procedures, just switch off multiplayer. You’re not losing anything by doing so, and you have far more to gain. Multiplayer exists for group flights, and lets face it, group flights aren’t exactly real world material either, are they?
I genuinely find it astounding that people who want to stay true to real world procedures think that having multiplayer on is a good idea.
To me is strange,
that most of players think that they can do anything they want in multiplayer, without to maybe pay attention to ask seriously if they can do this. You can see now that some rules need to be set, is 50/50 everytime.
I do switch off multiplayer, as I also wrote the first time.
But it’s kinda funny how you ask “who are any of us to dictate to others what way we should use the sim?”, only to claim a few sentences later that “Multiplayer exists for group flights”.
This thread is once again drifting away from the OP topic of “Top Gun Escort”. We understand it is easy to drift into discussing other unrelated subjects, so please try and get this thread back on message. Thanks!
The original post is about a guy flying his Kodiak, and out of nowhere he gets a “Top Gun escort”. If you’re on multiplayer, you have to expect unusual and unrealistic quirks like this.
My point is, use the sim whatever way you want, but just don’t expect others to conform to your set of “rules”. The very existence of multiplayer throws all real world procedures out the window.
I am the guy, who was flying his Kodiak, that wrote the original post. At the time, not being familiar with “multi-player” mode, I thought it was kind of cool that I could get an escort, however, it was distracting and I have since turned off Multi-player. What has surprised me is that no one has taken up the issue of weapons in MSFS. The guy who escorted me admitted he and his wingmen originally were trying to “intercept” me but discovered they could not use weapons…now if I had been shot out of the sky, I would not have thought it would have been so cool!
I think, as it has been mentioned many times, if you do not want to expect the unusual, turn off multi-player.
Exactly, No Live Weather from MICROSOFT… The weather will be dictated by Vatsim in the area I am flying in and I will be under pretty good volunteer ATC controllers that try their best to follow real life procedures. I will also be able to actually TALK to them, request flight plan deviations and completely change IFR plans if I so desire. All those wonderful real life, human interaction, things that you CANNOT simulate with the current ATC built into MSFS. So, there you go… was not a joke at all. Seems like you are not that familiar with Vatsim. Take a look, it is a pretty darn good simulation of real life ATC that marries well with this wonderful MSFS. Have a great weekend and Happy Flying.
I just signed up for $1 for 3 month promotion of game pass to try multi-player and actually was hoping someone would come near me but know one has come close.
So I flew up to some other planes (without interfering) and was so disappointed to see either planes showed up as invisible (e.g. darkstar) or airliners (e.g. FA18). I know this is mentioned multiple times in this thread and elsewhere and probably there is a “feature request” somewhere but it’s so disappointing to not see the real planes represented. For me, that really limits the usefulness of multi-player mode. I have many 3rd party planes and all the defaults planes and have yet to see anything but invisible or airliners.
This for me.
I’ve had a few players, whether during take off or landing, appear to sit on the holding area then slowly move on to the runway meaning I have to divert my flight path and do a go around.
ATC normally gives instruction, does it not to ground flights to give way to unbound flights?
Not sure its fair being penalised because someone else cant be bothered to adhere to rules and calls from ATC.
