Urgent Help Needed: MSFS won't start after windows reinstall!

OK, so I had some issues and had to reinstall Winders. I have backups of backups (too many, really, sometimes I get confused), so when I have issues, just reinstalling from scratch is NBD.

But here’s my problem. And it happened twice, as after the first time, I just reinstalled Winders again rather than trying to futz with it, but I was expecting it and took some (not very useful) pics.

So I let windows go through all it’s stuff, updated everything that needed updating (including Windows Store apps), installed OXR, and signed into Bing to get all my bookmarks, passwords, etc. Other than that it’s a completely virgin install, I haven’t even restored anything.

So I install Steam, and go to install FS, as shown:

Everything went just fine. So I started the app, and I’m greeted with this:

So, naturally, I hit the “Sign in” button, and this appears after I enter my credentials:

And NOW comes the problem. As soon as I hit “Let’s play!”, CTD. If I relaunch the app, right after the copyright screen, CTD. I can uninstall, reinstall, reboot, uninstall Steam, reinstall, reboot, any combination you can think of but the result is the same.

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!! I need my MSFS fix ASAP!!!

Signed,
How in the world can simply signing in to my XBox Live account cause this nonsense?!?

PS… There are no problems with the account, I’m logged in on my Xbox One, and I’m also logged in on the XBox app on my computer, again with no problem, so it ain’t that. HELP!!!

Hi KevyKevTPA, navigate to the location of your fs2020.exe, right click and run as administrator. Secondly run a few more Windows updates and make sure that everything has updated, sometimes it appears we have all updates but it’s not always the case.

@DonSimone80, thank you so much, but unfortunately neither suggestion worked. Starting it as an admin had the same problem, and rechecking for additional updates indicated that I’m as up to date as I can get!

ACK!!!

No please don’t do this. It is unnecessary and can do more harm.

There are may other topics about the same I’ve diged up with search:

So far nothing is helping. I’m trying to restore all the files MSFS hides in the appdata folder, we’ll see if that helps. If I break something, NBD, I can just reinstall windows (again), and no harm, no foul.

I’ve already done it twice, what’s a third time gonna cost me?

But that doesn’t mean to stop throwing ideas at me, by all means if you got 'em, put 'em out there!

What happened that made you reinstall windows?
Did you perform a clean install? For example did you install over the top or wipe the drive first and install?

@BrawnyBicycle85, I’ve been thinking about doing it anyway, and when I had some issues with Onedrive not syncing properly (at least I don’t think it was), I just said screw it and did a fresh, clean install. I keep local backups, plus what I have on Onedrive, so reinstalling Windows isn’t that big of a deal to me because I’ve got more than one recent (like daily) backups both to my NAS, and the Onedrive sync, so I’m not the least bit concerned with losing data. And from Microsoft directly, it’s a homebuilt system, so no OEM recovery partition nonsense.

Right now I’m restoring the FS folder that lives in appdata to see if that helps, but if I manage to break something, I’ll just start all over again, no biggie. I’m at 67GB and counting, so I’m thinking it can’t be that much more. I guess we’ll see.

Ok fair enough, some people install windows over the top and it shouldn’t make a difference but though I’d ask.

I’m still on Win Version 2004. Did clean install jump it up to 20H2 ? Try reinstalling MSFS in the C: drive maybe!

Yes, I’m on 20H2, but I’ve always had MSFS on the C drive, and very much on purpose as it’s an NVMe drive, and even though every test I’ve ever seen says that the only benefits NVMe has over any old SATA SSD require a benchmark to actually notice, I want to give it every possible bit of help I can.

That is if I can ever get it to run again!! I’m up to 3 Windows reinstalls as of now, and I’m desperately hoping I’m going to hear from someone before I start trying to reinstall the sim again, which I’m going to do in the next hour or so. They did send me a whole list of instructions of things to do, but they weren’t helpful, and had the appearance of being an automated response based on a keyword or combination of keywords, not a human intervention.

It is really unwise (and a violation of the CoC) to display your email address publicly. Please delete or obscure that part of the picture.

Could be something within the 20H2 version unless you were running it on that beforehand. It was working beforehand I take it before you reinstalled!
Check your connectivity… Latency and packet loss

Also I take it you have no Addons installed and tried it before adding any.
Check as well that you have nothing conflicting with MSFS with… Reliability history.

Thanks for the assistance, everyone, but I’m back. (Click the link for the thread with details.)

It’s not necessarily a happy fix, but at least I’m fixed and back ready to rock! I guess the skies called me too strongly!
