Ok, I’ve been flying the sim since launch. And I’ve flown over my town probably hundreds of times, including my work.
Today, for the first time, I noticed that as part of the horrible quality ground texture of the parking lot at my work, my car is actually there - a black Subaru in my designated parking space.
Yeah, it’s nothing to get excited about, but I just thought it was kind of funny. Especially since it took me 2 years to notice!
NASCAR announced a 2023 Chicago street race next year so I had to fly over it and get a look at the course. I always have a good time flying over Chicago anyway, so I use any excuse to do so.
I was taxi’ing out when I set flaps for take-off and I got a battery warning and decided to return to the parking area. It also showed a warning that my Generator was off, but I could not turn it on.
At the parking spot, I shut everything down and followed the in-game checklist correctly and now the warning was gone, and the battery was OK.
After that I departed to first check out if the free scenery add-on I downloaded yesterday would improve the Victoria Falls. It was improved somewhat!
I then proceeded to follow the Zambezi all the way to Lake Kariba to make a very hard landing at Binga.
I have learned that also this lake, the largest artificial body of water in the world, was created by the British during the colonial era. I guess by now people have adapted and hopefully benefit from it … I see now China is giving out loans to improve the power stations that are driven by the water in the reservoir. The impact colonialism has had on pretty much every country in the world never stops to unpleasantly surprise me.
It’s interesting that after Victoria Falls, the Zambezi bedding is in a valley, while before it was mostly level. It made me wonder why that is, I assume the water flows faster there, eroding the land more?
Continuing my journey across Canada and US, I flew Tucson AZ (KTUS) - Phoenix/Deer Valley AZ (KDVT) - Winslow AZ (KINW) - Telluride CO (KTEX) - Pueblo CO (KPUB) over the past couple days.
MSFS2020 on the XBOX, while giving folks without a PC an opportunity to participate in flight simming, is really frustrating when the app crashes. I’d experienced app resets only twice in the first 8000km of my trip and then I had 3 consecutive legs where the app reset while I was on final… total bummer…
ATC in the Rockies or anywhere the terrain changes elevation quickly is crazy to follow their instructions - pick an altitude and stick with it…
AZ and CO scenery is a joy to look at
the Corner in Winslow Arizona (Take it Easy, Eagles, 1972) is there but doesn’t get the love it deserves
Continuing from where I left off months ago. Tocumen, and down to Caracas today. Now flying inland looking for Angel Falls. Won’t be much to see I’m sure but gotta go.
Our two flight guests tonight. I hate crowded planes that´s why two PAX are enough! (Sometimes I accept four PAX - but only when they are Witcher 3 fans and a D&D group…)
Newest Nav database is installed. Maybe I can stop giving all my flight numbers a 666 because since I know IFR flying my flights are no longer going to hell
I’m not an achievement Hunter usually. But today decided to get the 25 starred airport achievement.
Just had five left to do so flew circuits and some interesting places I’ve never visited before.
Looking the achievement list there are so many I’ll never do because I tend not to do any of the curated experiences. And the SIM keeps losing my flight time.
Just found a massive caldera in this paradise island. Never realised it was there all along. Been in that lake back in 1998. There is a nice resort / cafe / hot spring overlooking Lake Kintamani in Mt Batur.
Given its size, this might be another super volcano that is still rarely studied yet, despite being in the popular island of Bali.
We now know that Mount Rinjani (2nd tallest volcano in Indonesia) from neighbouring island of Lombok used to be a some kind of super big volcano once named Mt Samalas. It erupted back in 1257, before collapsing it into Lake Anak (Segara Anak) and peaking at Mount Rinjani.
The more popular Toba super volcano erupted 70,000 years ago, the second largest ever after Lake Taupo (New Zealand), and nearly extinguished mankind from this planet. Mount Batur erupted about 20,000 - 25,000 years ago and still not much reading materials found on the internet estimating how big the explosion was.
Mt Tambora explosion in 1815, considered the largest ever in human history ( > VEI 7) “The Year Without Summer”, bigger than 1883’s Krakatoa explosion, produced a crater with 6 km diameter. Quite massive, and you can clearly see in MSFS. The Samalas volcano explosion in 1257 left a crater with 6 x 8.5 km size (also clearly visible in MSFS).
Batur caldera is 10 x 13 km - pretty big, bigger than island of Manhattan, easily making people oblivious to its presence.
Comparison:
Manhattan: 21.6 x 3.7 km
Aso Caldera (Kyushu) 25 x 18 km
Toba Caldera (Sumatera): 35 x 100 km
Yellowstone Caldera (Wyoming): 70 x 45 km
