To be fair it was mostly headwind, and a flapless landing. I was practically hovering when I landed.
The second approach was not so good, and I had far less visibility. I didn’t even see the edge lights until I had almost touched down. That single light is on the centre line.
I just somehow pulled it off in the F-14B. That was quite difficult. It’s so dark, windy, and rainy there that it’s pretty dang difficult without ILS right now. Sim aside, I really hope the people there are OK. What a storm!
Its interesting how the visibility changes over time. One second you can see the approach lights, the next you can see nothing until you are right on top of them.
So true. I could have/should have used ILS, but I wanted to do it by hand. I had the runway lights a couple of miles out due to a lucky lightning strike near the airport. Just as I was touching down, it got very dark. Lost all of the lights and landed hard.
For those that complain about immersion, this is your chance to see how immersive this thing can be! WOW!
Turn off crash detection and you can fly anything you want…But for realism I’d say the CJ4 or Caravan are probably the two that could conceivably handle the abuse, for a little while anyway. Just don’t fly INTO storms, just around them:-)
I did this in FSX years ago just to see what happens with winds maxed out manually. What you described was exactly what happened.
You can set winds pretty high in MSFS2020 manually too but I don’t remember how high it goes. So representing a hurricane in MSFS is probably identical to just turning wind up to max and adding rain.
Just landed at KMSY in 737-600… Cruise was all good, on descent at around 18,000 I started getting beat up pretty bad. Constant lightning, wind, rain… LOTS of turbulence (courtesy of ActiveSky and RealTurb)… Then at about 2,000 feet things stabilized, but again… my indicated speed was 127 but I was barely moving against the wind. Flaps 40, had to increase speed to 145 to move. Then on final both of the autopilots crapped out and Mach and Speed trims failed. AP disconnected during the attempt to do Cat IIIc auto-land (disconnected around 800 feet AGL) so I flew the last bit by hand and skid off the runway. It was BAD. It’s interesting how the AP failed. I never got banged around in any of PMDG’s birds as much as I did on this one today. Next up, gonna try a takeoff in a CS 737-300. This is wicked fun. BUT…
I hope the people in Louisiana will be OK, it looks really bad on the news. Sim fun aside, my heart goes out to them. Lots of destruction happening, this is no fun and games for them. We are here having fun with simulators and they have a lot of struggle coming up. If anyone else is able to donate to relief that I am sure will be needed, please join me.
Yeah I just went and tried it. 150 kt tail wind in a C152 is not survivable
1350kt wind from any direction, you wouldnt have time to flip on the bat switch.
My 737-300 flight from last night was amazing. No issues other than a VERY bumpy ride to cruise and for some time IN cruise until I cleared the affected area. From there on it was a smooth flight to sunny San Antonio. The sky was very dramatic and the wind/rain/turbulence effects were I dare say better than anything in MSFS. This was on P3D v5. I still love that sim. I hope MSFS will start to improve its procedural flying aspects and fidelity - the PMDG 737 should be nice when it comes out.
I have never even tried P3D and I think I missed out there to be honest. It seems as if all the top developers went there rather than X-Plane 11 which was my main sim.
Not knocking X-Plane 11 here (or a lot of the third party developers who are very good too) because I had a lot of fun with it but until MSFS2020 came along I had never ever experienced a PMDG product (DC6) and that is now one of my four favourite aircraft. I also love GA aircraft (more my ‘thing’ rather than airliners to be honest) and I have never tried an A2A product. Very excited for the Comanche 250 to see how good A2A really are but I suspect I will have a long wait. I like Milviz so far too (Corsair) who also didn’t really show up in X-Plane 11. Looking forward to their Cessna 310 which I really think will come out pretty soon. Here’ s hoping so anyway
Any plane you like as no size of storm up to and including a hurricane presents any threat in this game. What’s the point in including a weather radar, but not any need to use it since you can head straight through the magenta without a bump?
But yeh, it looks good so I guess that’s all that matters in a supposed simulator.
