Monte Roraima POI in World Update 19 (WU19)

Part 1

So I was very curious to see how this POI was rendered in WU19. How would it look? Would there be prehistoric animals :sauropod:or dinosaurs :t_rex:roaming the top of the plateau (should be, if you read this book or watched this movie as a child!)

So here we are at Caramambataí (Mapae) Airport (SJKQ). There are no parking spots at this airstrip, so I started cold-n-dark by the side of the runway. I chose the Draco X for it’s excellent rate of climb - I thought that could come in handy when confronted with a vertical cliff-face. No fauna at the airport - not even a :mouse:

After take off, my flight path took me by Maringma Tepui (2,147m). What’s all this white stuff?

I’m thinking maybe clouds baked into the imagery, but it sure spoils the immersion factor.

Reaching Roraima Tepui the initial view was disappointing. The POI appears to have been plonked on top of the existing cliffs, which appear not to have the new 2024 cliff-face textures, but the 2020 “smeared imagery”:

The plateau is not much better. Very odd fluorescent green “vegetation” and water climbing up vertical rock faces. Or is this some sort of alien life form creeping up & out of the water?:

There has been no attempt to gracefully merge vegetation and rock textures - just a hard line delineating the two:

Let’s land for a closer look. Yikes! In places, eons of rain has created a swamp of mire and muck over 5 feet deep!:

In some places one submerges completely to discover the subterranean caverns of Roraima, until now totally unknown to modern science! No prehistoric animals or dinosaurs here either. But I’m pretty sure this would make a great starting point for a Journey to the Center of the Earth:

There are a few places where one can gain solid ground. Unfortunately, even after about 5 minutes of exploration, the ground textures are still a blurry mess:

Part 2

Back in the air, there are a places where the rock plateau looks pretty good:

But then one comes across these squiggly lines in the rock face - a bad representation of a waterfall, perhaps?:

and more snow:

and a weird clear-cut:

here one sees a combination of 2024 rock-face below the POI and 2020 smearing:

and green fluorescent “stuff” climbing up the POI:

My final picture, as I head south to my destination at Boa Vista Intl (SBBV). It’s a pity that the entire plateau could not look at least like this:

In conclusion, the absence of prehistoric animals or dinosaurs is probably a good thing , but if you look at some real life pictures of Mount Roraima, the creator of this POI, though they obviously tried to make it as realistic as possible, did not quite make it.

The addition of waterfalls, the lower-level cliff face, and better textures & vegetation on the plateau summit would have helped a lot.

As such an iconic landmark in popular culture, I was expecting a better representation.

… thank you for bringing up the topic!

As I climbed the Roraima IRL and spend some days exploring I might add some info and pics from the top.

Access is thru Paso de Las Lágrimas on the SE-face, where Bing says “2810m”:

looks fearsome but its not so difficult:

the ramp is not handcrafted in MS2020:

the plateau consists of bizarre rock formations and vertical caves (some hundreds of meters deep), you would need a DEM in the cm (!) range.

these are the rivers they tried to model, see the sparse vegetation:

some places have this eerie green shine indeed:

we did not see dinosaurs but a frog, living fossil from the jurassic period. :t_rex: :frog:

On 2020 there are not so many baked clouds at the base, so they must have changed to a new set of sat pics.

For me, compared to the overall disappointing WU19, this Tepui is quite OK.

A word of caution:
never try to land a plane on a Table mountain, the only guy who ever tried this had to walk out:
Weltfliegers: Aviation Pioneers of the 1920/30s - Discussion Hub / World Discovery - Microsoft Flight Simulator Forums

on site they use pretty worn out choppers…

Yeah, I was disapointed too with the rendition of this Mount that I was waiting for. I even attempted to make it look good with the SDK in FS2020 but it was a too huge task.

But this one is not fun to see too close, from the side as you mentionned or the top. These weird streams and colors look like quick job. Sad result. I would I also liked that they do the Weiassipu tepui just close to Roraima as seen in this expedition movie :

Thank you so much for posting those pics. This is place that I would have loved to have visited in real life, and although I lived in Central & South America for a while, I never managed to get to do this. MSFS 20204 is thus the closest I’ll ever get to experiencing it.

As I wrote a few days ago in the Brazil update poll thread I am also disappointed by the listless rendition microsobo did here.

Not only the missing waterfalls, weird ramp and so on to me the most incomprehensible thing is that they model Roraima and leave the nearby Tepuis (Eastern Tepui, Wei-Assipu, Maringma and Yuruani Tepui) that are part of the system, part of the scenery, completyely untouched!?! What? They look more strange now than before!

South americas needs a complete surface model redesign imho to make such unambitioned modeling obsolete. There are so many amazing and unique landscapes to worship. This continent deserves more respect.

And to think this World Update has been delayed a year. You’d think they had time to really make it perfect and not have these things in it

… at first I was surprised that they did not model connected Kukenan Tepui until I realized that it (like all other big Table Mountains) is outside the scope of WU19.

But at least you can land any plane Jimmy-Angel style on the solid ground of this molehill and climb the pyramid

;

Disappointing also French Guyana - there should be beaucoup of much better HiRes Sat Data around!
Was looking for the Ariane Missile Ranges - just POIs, no models (some stuff exists: Paris-Le Bourget - LFPB for Microsoft Flight Simulator | MSFS) and FSX-type-ground:
checking with Bing proper you see they downgraded it (for safety reasons! ?

Lets hope for a better Venezuela-Colombia-Ecuador combo sometimes, but alas: we are the minority of a minority inside a minority…

Also, check out this YouTube segment of the March 14th 2025 Developer Livestream.

Jorg mentions that for WUs he needs to get a Vexcel plane with the right camera equipment & crew to these locales for a year or two - and to be patient. It is unlikely that MSFS will have any Vexcel updates to these additional areas in South America until 2027 or 2028.

Maybe a problem for you and me, but also for the largest company by market cap* on this planet right now? Imho it is only a question of will, not of ability.

Just do it, please.

… guess the Vexcel is used only for PG of big cities. And for the areas that we are interested in: most likely there exist no LIDAR-DEMs, only old (30m?) SA-Radar data. So I’m not that hopeful.

On a WU19 sideline:
here is a flight in Suriname by a Swiss expat bushpilot, a rare occasion where we can directly compare “in the boonies” RL-Video (unfortunately in German) to the sim:

He flies for United Aviation Services @ SMZO Paramaribo - their shacks are nicely modeled (5.8113470, -55.197349):

From there the guy goes with the Cessna 206 over the huge Rosebel gold mine (we land) and the Brokopondo Lake:

Then comes three bush strips:

1:27 & 34:50 min
SMPT Apetina (countries shortest: 347m), village supply runs (350kg load)

5:03
SMOL Oelemari Gold Mine, he gets a nugget as a tip.

7:40 & 15:45
SMPA Vincent Falls, Village Paloemeo, for NGO Amazon Conservation Project

They are all in our PLN, with a detour to the Kasikasima handcrafted rocks:

GUYANA: Border Patrol

another M2020 WU19 check-ride deep into the wild, whats your impression?

Since some time, Venezuela threatens to invade Guyana to seize a big chunk of the Essequibo region.

You fly a Harbin Y-12 or HAL 228 (here Twin Otter) of the miniscule Guyana Defence Force along the western border.

Pass Roraima and continue down to the southern tip of the country, looking for illegal gold miners entering the Gran Sabana from Brazil.
Land at 7 bush strips (min. 337m length), some are difficult to find.

The size of the company unfortunately has little to do with it. They also need permissions from the respective countries to fly over and make detailed maps. Some are very reluctent and/or there is a lot of bureaucracy.

You are all right. That are possible reasons.

But it is all about communication. Why microsobo doesnt state clearly in wich countries they have permission and are working on and in wich the have some challenges to solve? Nobody is holding them back from good communication and nobody will blame them for real reasons.

And releasing such half boiled meal is’nt very pro imho. At least my boss will kick my back pocket if I do so.

Roraima is gone in M2024 - back to anthill. And the slope is full of arctic spruce and not tropical veggie - any idea why?

Just another reason to stay with M2020…

I cannot repro this - it is still there on my PC in SU3 v1.5.27.0:

… strange: am also on 1.5.27.0, object_level_on_detail = 150, anthill is fully reproducible.

Are devs reading this or should it be copied to the “bug” section?

Since it not reproduced on my system, we should wait to see if other users are experiencing the same issue as you are seeing.

My OLOD is set to 200, and was at that setting as shown in the FPS widget in the screenshot.

If you check the POI checkbox in settings, do you see the POI label as shown in my screenshot? Also, is this the only POI missing, or are others missing from Brazil with WU19 enabled?

… lets see what the future brings.

I bought the “Premium Deluxe M2024” which has unfortunalety many issues.
Am not interested in walk-arounds or career mode, so for me the only real difference is the delineation of the vertical cliffs - which are great in M2024 BTW.
But SU16 has brought the 20 to an all new DEM level.
Have invested a lot in M2020 and so will supply the community with more PLNs for it, until making the move finally…
