New Rudder Pedals for my Husband

Hi - signed up for some advice. My husband is an avid simmer with quite a bit of the tech (mainly thrustmaster add ons). I thought he might like a rudder foot controller and hoping people might weight in on a) is this a good gift? and b) if yes, which one do you recommend?

TIA (and happy flying, if that’s a thing that would be appricated here = sentiment is warm wishes  )

Thrustmaster have TPR pedals. They are excellent and any husband who does not appreciate that needs their head read! :joy: :joy: You will notice online they are upright so ensure sufficient space under his table.

Hi Natalie and welcome to the forums!

I’ve moved your post into User Support Hub > Hardware & Peripherals so that the community can assist (more folks will see your topic in this category than in “New Simmers Introduce Yourself”).

Here are some topics (some are quite old though, so information may be out-of-date) that might help:

I have been very happy with my Virpil ACE Pedals:

There are some Force Feedback pedals by Moza “coming soon” that look awesome too though. Lots of choice!

Maybe worth seeing if he’d be interested in those and get him this in the meantime. :frowning:

A vote for the Turtle Beach Velocity One rudder pedals.

I concur with BigCow….a very durable and well made set of pedals. Walks all over my old Saitek ones.

Turtle beach rudders here, had em since launch and have held up quite well.

Mfg crosswinds with Airbus pedals is my next move but that’s for an a320 specific setup.

Happy flying Natalie!

Can I ask what sort of budget you are looking at and which country you are in? I’m going to base part of my reply on you being in the US and that he is using a PC rather than an X-Box. I will give examples from NewEgg as I notice most of the suggestions here are for what I would call the more expensive end. Note that this is NOT a comprehensive list of what is available and only uses prices from one source. There are others and cheaper/more expensive options available.

Thrustmaster TFRP (T.Flight) Rudder Pedals — $129.99.
Logitech G / Saitek PRO Flight Rudder Pedals (G Flight Professional) — $179.99.
Thrustmaster TPR (Pendular Rudder) — Pendular Rudder Joystick — $599.99.
Honeycomb Charlie Rudder Pedals — $659.99.

Obviously the cheaper the more basic it is BUT I used the Saitek/Logitech Rudder Pedals for over 10 years and they did the job I needed. My current set are the Thrustmaster TPR Pedals and I love them! I have been using them for the last 3 years and they’re awesome - to me!

If these are his first set of rudder pedals I’m sure he’ll be ecstatic to receive any of them because they’ll totally transform the way he flies.

While inexpensive, I would highly recommend avoiding the Thrustmaster TFRP. Their action is not smooth (no matter how many times I took them apart, polished, and lubricated their sliding surfaces), and I found myself more frustrated by them than not. They really aren’t worth their cheap entry price.

The pricey Thrustmaster TPR are definitely worth their expense (I replaced the TFRP with the TPR, but I know the other less expensive offerings from other manufacturers receive high praise from those who have them.

After 15 years of flying General Aviation (only) aircraft with Saitek/Logitech rudder pedals - enduring their cheap quality, noise, and poor fee - I finally switched to the TurtleBeach VelocityOne rudder a few weeks ago. So far, no regrets!

It’s all depend on the budget, the usage (liner, helicopters, small aircraft…) and the available space.

PS: it’s so cute you’re thinking of your husband and get into this forum! Thanks for him!

Another vote here for the Turtle Beach Velocity One pedals. Very smooth, durable, and priced in the mid-range at $320 USD. Great value.

I have most of these devices in my office and can honestly say that the WINWING Orion is the one I use the most. Make that always. It is just the smoothest and most stable, and can be configured a lot.

I have found for me personally that rudder padels are a very… well, personal thing. Why is your husband not using ruddre padels already ? If it is a question of budget that is one thing but maybe he doesnt like using pedals ? I am asking because that is how it was for me for many years. Reasons for not wanting to use pedals range from comfort, injury, disability to simple space requirements.

That being said, once I DID get pedals I was very happy with the Velocity One Rudders - as far as I know, they are the only ones with adjustable width. Wich was in the end 75 percent of why I started using rudder padels.

You get decend value for your buck and wont break the bank.

Good luck !

I agree with you. I also have the TFRP and they drive me crazy all the time because they are not smooth despite the lubrication .Very bad. Impossible to use with Eli.

Once you’ve used the Thrustmaster TPR’s you’ll wonder how you ever managed without them. Worth the price. Steer well clear of the Saitek/Logitek pedals they are truly not worth the bother. It’s better to fly with a joystick with rudder on a twist action than those things. Budget is key here. You mostly get what you pay for.

Hi Mathijs ,I would like to discard my actual TFRP for a better rudder. The Wingwing you posted here looks great!! One question (the answer could help Natalie too : Are the Wingwing pedals PLUNG & Play? You are a software expert…and can easily play with their software driver and settings without problems but who ins’t ?? As I said the TFRP are quite bad to use but the installation was very easy : plug & play. Thanks for the advice..

Thrustmaster TFRP will do the job for a reasonable price tag.
